Technology …is the technical means people use to improve their surroundings. It is also a knowledge of using tools and machines to do tasks efficiently. We use technology to manage the world in which we live. Technology is people using knowledge, tools, and systems to make their lives easier and better.
Technology… …People use technology to improve their ability to do work. Through technology, people communicate better. Technology allows them to make more and better products. Our buildings are better through the use of technology. We travel in more comfort and speed as a result of technology. Yes, technology is everywhere and can make life better. Is that true?

Technology Management • Management of technology links engineering, science and management disciplines to plan, develop, and implement technological capabilities to shape and accomplish the strategic and operational goals of an organization.

Format of study for course • Do independent research with respect to the technology or industry topic • Generate questions about the topic and business implications for the visiting lecturer • Hand in assignment at the start of class
Format of study for course Think through the technology’s impact on • The consumer/user and their quality of life • The environment • Capital requirements • Ethical issues • The business model to make profit

Weekly Assignments • There is no text book for this course. For reference and independent study, students will research web sources each week for material on the current week’s topic. Five (5) sources are suggested as a minimum set of sources for your study and research. • Industry Association • Technology product company • Technology service provider • Industry Conference provider (i.e. Insight Information www.insightinfo.com) • Government department or Ministry • You are to hand in each week: • the site sources researched • an evaluation of the web sites research on a scale of 1 to 10 (1 dreadful – 10 awesome) • 3 questions for discussion on the technology or industry of the current week
Individual Paper • The paper is a 1200-1500 word paper in which you address the emergence and relative importance of a technology of specific eras • You will need to cite all of your references in text and include the references at the end • Follow “Writing Guidelines” link on the website at http://www.nipissingu.ca/faculty/TBA
Group Assignment • A Group Project involving sets of three teams (Team A / Team B and an Evaluation Committee) representing either: two vendors of an information technology system selection or two competing business cases of technology alternatives
Final Exam • To be scheduled in April • Essay questions related to the course content • Further details in March
Outcomes • Appreciate the breadth and depth of technology in business so that you can consider pursuing the Technical Management stream of studies • Understand some of the major business issues that are prevalent in the presence of technology • To have an awareness of business opportunities and risks associated with technologies and strategies that may be implemented to exploit or mitigate risks
