eBusiness Lesson #1 • Claim Your Domain Name • Look for a natural fit with your business name. http://www.networksolutions.com • Protect all trademarks, including model names. • Claim the common name if you can. I.e. – http://www.hockeystick.com
eBusiness Lesson #2 • Treat the Internet as an integrated component of your marketing mix. • Look at the World Wide Web and Electronic Mail as media equivalent to print and broadcast media.
eBusiness Lesson #3 • Walk before you run. • Get connected – dial-up, ISDN, DSL, Cable Router, 56k or T1. For one? For a select few? For all? • Begin with email – move to a one-way secured Web interface and eventually embrace transaction processing • Understand the challenges of each eCommerce/eBusiness model before you invest • Business to Consumer • Business to Business

eBusiness Lesson #6 • Be Patient with Your Expectations • Your business partners are accustomed to established practices. The Internet will ask them to change. • Amazon.com still not making money • Potential customers usually visit on numerous occasions before they place their initial first order. Once you have a satisfied customer, you have a repeat customer!!!
eBusiness Lesson #7 • Collect and analyze information from your site visitors. • Identify the pages and products that are generating the greatest amount of interest. • Redesign your site to take advantage of the marketing information collected by your site. • Tools like WebTrends and Microsoft Site Server are underutilized. • Get an email address. It makes one-to-one correspondence possible.
eBusiness Lesson #8 • Decide how you will host your eBusiness initiative • An internet service provider (ISP) • A commerce service provider (CSP) • Internally on your own server???
eBusiness Lesson #9 • Don’t save money on graphics • First impressions can be lasting impressions. • Your blend of color and supporting images needs to lead to a pleasant experience or, if not well done, it will lead to a “short” shopping experience. • Compress your images for speed.
eBusiness Lesson #10 • Don’t Link to the World • Links lead shoppers away from your site, be careful in providing any links. • If you must, seek a reciprocal link from those that are listed.
eBusiness Lesson #11 • eBusiness Requires Security • To assure data and system integrity • Uses tools of restriction, encryption, signatures, authentication, certificate exchange, signed receipt, verification…… • A Firewall • A Proxy Server • Intrusion (Internal and External) Detection Server Software • SSL – Secure Socket Layer • SET – Secure Electronic Transactions • IPSec – Internet Protocol Security
