  1. FY2011 Library PlanDiscussion Tammy Welcome LBNL Library Committee August 30, 2010

  2. Mission Provide responsive and timely information access to aid LBNL scientists conduct research

  3. Improve library collection with materials relevant to Laboratory research Why?  • Lab scientists readily have access to relevant materials to conduct their research How? • Collaborate with UCB to expand online access to research journals and backfiles  • Collaborate with UCB to expand online access to e-books and e-resources   • Update book collection Measure?  • Customer satisfaction (including relevance, responsiveness, availability), experience and use over three year timeframe • Inter-library loan counts • Collection growth by material type and subject

  4. Improve utilization of library resources by Lab scientists Why?   • Effective use of existing and new library resources How? • Develop and implement communication plan for promoting availability of library resources • Update Library website and Frequently Asked Questions • Evaluate the implementation of link resolver to connect patrons directly with e-resources  Measure? • Customer satisfaction • Resource usage statistics where possible • Circulation statistics

  5. Create replacement strategy for library management tools Why?  • Create efficiencies for staff in managing library resources • Improve ease of use and functionality for library patrons  How? •  Assess requirements for Integrated Library System (cataloging, circulation, and inter-library loan), select tool, and implement Measure? • Time to process and maintain ILL requests and catalog new materials • Ability of patron to initiate service requests online and assess availability of resources outside of the lab at other local libraries • Customer satisfaction

  6. Maximize resource access while minimizing space needs Why? • Meet lab’s overall strategic initiative to effectively utilize space • Improve accessibility to collection  How? • Increase access to e-resources per earlier goal • Move physical collection from B50-4034 to Compact Shelving and new Reading Room • Develop on-going process to cull library materials on a periodic basis to optimize space for more relevant collection holdings for strategic initiatives Measure? • Space utilization within safety constraints • Resource count to space ratio • Foot traffic, reshelving, and circulation statistics

  7. Improve public access to the Lab’s research reports Why? • Publicize Lab's contribution to scientific research and improve community relations How? • Develop and implement communication plan to encourage scientists to make research publicly available through Reports Coordination • Man table at one community outreach event to publicize and promote public access to Lab research Measure?  • Number of reports submitted to Reports Coordination for posting at OSTI and eScholarship  • Attendance at community outreach event, feedback from participation
