Cross-cutting activities are increasing: • i) Subseasonal to Seasonal Prediction Project; ii) Polar Prediction Project; iii) IRDR-SERA collaboration; Workshop on NWP in Nowcasting
The THORPEX (THe Observing Research and Predictability Experiment) programme The YOTC International Science Symposium, convened in Beijing 16-19 May 2011; A bid to the European Commission for funding to support future TIGGE and TIGGE-LAM developments has been successful (GEOWOW); Legacy of THORPEX (DAOS, TIGGE, PDP) Two new important initiatives: i) Subseasonal to Seasonal Prediction Project; ii) Polar Prediction Project.
Mesoscale Weather Forecasting Research The WG is involved in many major initiatives: COPS, FROST14, HyMEX, TOMACS and Grey Zone project Workshop HiRCoT12 (HIgh Resolution modeling in COmplex Terrain 2012) terrain Tropical Meteorology Research • The 1st International Workshop on Monsoon Heavy Rainfall (Beijing, China. 14-16 Oct 2011), • The International Workshop on Tropical Cyclone Unusual Behavior (Xiamen, China 18-20 Oct 2011) • "The Global Monsoon System: Research and Forecast (2nd edition)“ "Climate Bridging Weather and Climate in the Research and Forecasts of the Global Monsoon System",
Verification Research JWGFVR met with the Mesoscale Weather Forecasting Research WG in September 2011 in Berlin. Discussion topics included WWRP experiments (SNOW‐V10, FROST‐14, HyMeX). The 5th International Verification Methods Workshop and WMO training course was held in Melbourne, Australia, in December 2011.
About Optimizing WWRP activities: an example Reexamine the pertinence of organizing WWRP conferences in general; Focus our conference budget to the support of special WWRP sessions in well known and well organized conferences (EGU, AMS, AGU, etc.); The advantage is to request less support from the secretariat and travel budget; It would insure very large participation and surely bring more diversity to the audience; It will mix the WWRP community with other scientific events ; The WWRP fund would be used to invite speakers for the special WWRP sessions and to organize side meetings for decision making processes.; Since the sessions would be co-convened by WWRP WG chairs and members, we would be able to stir the agenda with our priorities.
Thank you! Merci!
