A New Rhythm In Our Nation By: Florentia Spires Educator in STEM Leadership
Agenda • Welcome Remarks • Introduction • U.S. Assessment • Considerations - Developing a STEM Curriculum • STEM Activity • What we can do…… • “Take Aways”
How are we doing? • According to the 2009 “Program for International Student Assessment,” (PISA) U.S. students placed: 14th in reading 17th in science 25th in math • Fewer than 1/3 of U.S. 8th graders proficient in mathematics 1/5 4th graders and 1/3 8th graders can not perform basic computations Credit: U.S. Department of Education; NEA
Engineering in Undergraduate • About 6% of US undergraduates major in engineering (2nd lowest in developed countries) Europe- 12% Singapore- 20% China – 40%
Specialized Areas of Concern • 80 percent of kids drop out because they cannot pass algebra • Read and understand specialized text 1/12:1/50
STEM and Gender 9.5% vs. 4.1% in middle school
STEM Majors Left Behind • Minorities • Low income students • Women-underrepresented
Engineering Growth Projections • Aerospace 10% - • Civil 24% + • Electrical 2% • Environmental 31% • Industrial 14% • Mechanical 6% • Chemical 2% decline
Prominence of Rigor Enhance students problem solving abilities challenging them with high expectations and standards. Essential components of rigor in the classroom: • Content acquisition • Critical thinking • Relevance • Integration • Application of concepts • Long term retention • Responsibility http://www.theCenter4Learning.com Bloom’s Taxonomy
Young Innovator Jack Andraka
STEM Activity • Grade level specific groups • Recorder, reporter, team lead, materials manager, technical assistant, timer, sound monitor • Timed activity • Present your findings
NASA Lightening Protection System • Positive and negative charge • Electromagnetism • Math/cone of safety h=r, measurement, angles • Chemistry • Forces with foundation • Heat energy/transfer and more………..
Extension • How could you alter this activity for the grade level that you teach? • What Common Core Standards/A Framework for K-12 Science Education were addressed in this activity? • How would you assess the learning gained from this activity?
It’s Not Too Late! • Career Mapping motivation, engagement, decision making, and personal accountability • 7th Grade Interest • STEM engagement in elementary school • Lesson connect to their lives
“Take Aways” • MESA • NASA • SECME • A World in Motion • Technology & Engineering of STEM Resource Sheet
