Infrastructure at UPRM enabling international research • The Center For Hemispherical Cooperation In Research And Education In Engineering And Applied Science (CoHemis) was founded in 1991 during a conference sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez (UPRM). • Its mission is to “promote and facilitate the development of human resources, technology, and programs that help to organize research and educational initiatives in science and engineering for the benefit of the western hemisphere countries”. • After NSF funding was finished, the UPR has continued funding CoHemis, together with the collaboration of cooperating institutions, allowing the Center to carry on the mission and increase its level of service. • In 1992, CoHemis began to form a hemispheric network of institutions committed to collaborate with the Center’s mission and objectives. Actually, the CoHemis Consortium includes 51 institutions (36 universities and 15 institutions of science and technology) from 21 countries of the Americas, the Caribbean, and Spain. • Current staff: Director, Co-Director, Coordinator, Administrative Assistant
