“Anabaptist” • Means: “over again” or “re-baptizer” • It is sort of a mixture between Catholic and Protestants • It began with the Radical Reformers in (about) the 16th century
Basic Introduction • “re-baptism” is considered their “first baptism” • People can only be properly baptized when they are a little older • Infants that were baptized will be baptized again
Beginning of Anabaptist • It began in the 16th century • Got famous in Saxony and Thuringia in 1521-25 • Two main people who spread it in Saxony and Thuringia were: • Nicholas Storch • Thomas Munzer
Continued… • Thomas Munzer or “Tomas Muncer” • Was German • Lived 1489 – 27 May 1525 • Was once a rebel leader
Teachings of Anabaptist • Focused on The Bible and Jesus' teachings • They respected the Bible’s authority but disagreed about its interpretion • Focused more on Jesus and his life • Forgives sins easily • Taught that what we own isn’t ours but we should also give it to the ones in need
Continued… • They had churches • Everyone is an automatic member of the church • They don’t support violence • Gov. can use violence but it is not appropriate for Christians
Continued… • They didn’t swear oaths • They should always be truthful, not only under an oath • An Anabaptist is to never use a sword to punish anyone • They were fine with prosecuting
Uniqueness of Anabaptist • “middle path” or “third path” • They were the first ones to disagree to baptizing infants • They were a mixture of Protestants and Catholics • It gives a new idea, about faith and renew and rebirth
Other Facts • Anabaptists called themselves brothers and sisters • They believed the church was “fallen” too much to reform
