What IS Body Image? • It is the mental picture one has of his or her physical appearance and the associated attitudes and feeling towards it. • How you feel about your body • What you believe about your body • How you see yourself • How you thing you look to others • Body Image is constantly changing and doesn’t always reflect what is realistic
Self-Esteem • Describes how valued or worthy a person feels • Your opinion of yourself • Components that determine your sense of self-esteem: • Body image • Relationships with others • Personal achievements
Factors that Influence Body Image • Impact of the Media • Family Influences • Friends affect how you see ourselves • Life changes us
Exploring Set-Point Theory • What is the Set-Point Theory? • Says that each of us has a weight that our body is “programmed” to maintain • Says our body will regulate itself to prevent weight loss or weight gain by either slowing down or increasing metabolism • Theory may be too simplistic: people lose weight and gain weight all the time
Unhealthy Eating Habits • Being preoccupied with food or body size/shape, having frequent thoughts about food, eating, and body size/shape • Restrictive eating: not eating enough food to feel satisfied • Not eating enough food to maintain a healthy body weight • Frequently feeling unhappy with one’s body size/shape
Binge eating: eating large amounts of food in on sitting and feeling a lack of control over eating • Purging: using various techniques to try to rid the body of calories (self induced vomiting, laxative misuse) • Over- exercising: exercising for the sole purpose of ridding the body of calories
What Causes Unhealthy Eating Habits? • Having Family members with a history of unhealthy eating • Certain personality traits such as perfectionism, obsessiveness, negative self-evaluation, anxiety, and/or inflexibility combined with an overvaluation of appearance • Engaging in a profession/hobby that involves pressure to be thin • Living in a society where a thin body is seen as ideal • Childhood adversity including abuse and death among close relatives or friends • Being overweight and/or having people making critical comments about weight, shape, or eating
Creating a Healthy Body Image • Many images presented by the media do not reflect the way most people are in reality • Physical appearance is just one aspect of your being: your thoughts, values, beliefs, and accomplishments also represent very important aspect of who you are • Instead of valuing your body simply for the way it looks, remember that it’s a useful tool that can help you enjoy life’s opportunities • Learn to say no to experiences that you know will make you feel bad about the way you view your body • Eat well, be active, and love you that you are!!
