  2. Review • What is an independent clause? • What is a dependent clause? • What is a compound sentence?

  3. Review • Han waited for the bus and it arrived on time. • Junior wanted to play video games but couldn’t. • We could get a mutt now or a golden retriever in two months. • It wasn’t supposed to rain today but it’s pouring outside!

  4. Complex Sentences • A complex sentence has one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses. • The two clauses in a complex sentence are joined together by a subordinating conjunction.

  6. AAAWWUUBBIS

  7. NEED TO KNOW • Attaching an AAAWWUUBIS to the beginning of a phrase makes it a DEPENDENT CLAUSE. • Example: • Because I wanted to see what was inside the cabinet. • Until my stomach hurt so much I couldn’t take it.

  8. RULES • RULE 1: When your complex sentence begins with an AAAWWUUBBIS, you need a comma at the end of the dependent clause. • EXAMPLE: Until I bring my grades up, I can’t play sports.

  9. Rules • RULE 2: You DO NOT need a comma if your complex sentences does not begin with the AAAWWUUBBIS. • EXAMPLE: I can’t play sports until I bring my grades up.

  10. Example • Circle the conjunction. Underline the dependent clause once and the independent clause twice. Insert a comma if one is necessary. • Because Dad was late coming home we didn’t eat dinner until 8:45. • We didn’t eat dinner until 8:45 because Dad was late coming home.

  11. Quick Practice • Rhonda gasped when a six-foot snake slithered by. • Even though the broccoli was covered in cheese Eric refused to eat it. • Unless Christine finishes her math homework she won’t be able to hang out. • The dog gnawed on the table let while Bailey slept on the sofa.

  12. Examine “Real World” Writing • Exercise1: Take a few minutes to page through your free reading book. Find examples of complex sentences. Write the examples you find on your handout. • Exercise 2: Now page through your own writing. Look for both complex (AAAWWUUBIS) and compound (FANBOYS) sentences. Write the examples you find on your handout, and FIX any mistakes you might have made.
