  3. WHAT ARE THEY? WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES? VOLATILE SOLVENTS:  Liquids that become a gas at room temperature  Some examples include:  Paint Thinners  Gasoline  Glues  Felt-tip Markers

  4. WHAT ARE THEY? WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES? GASES  Medical gases and household or commercial products  Some examples include:  Butane Lighters  Propane Tanks  Whipped Cream Dispensers  Refrigerants

  5. WHAT ARE THEY? WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES? Aerosol Sprays  Dispensing system that creates an aerosol mist of liquid particles  Some examples include:  Spray Paints  Hairsprays  Vegetable Oil Cooking Sprays  Spray-on Deodorants

  6. HOW DO YOU ABUSE INHALANTS? People inhale these chemical vapors in several ways: • Sniffing • Snorting • Spraying the inhalant DIRECTLY INTO the nose • Spraying inhalant onto a rag and directly inhaling from there • Inhaling nitrous oxide from balloons

SHORT/LONG TERM EFFECTS Because the high from inhalants only lasts for a couple of minutes, some people inhale the fumes over and over again for long periods of time to maintain that high, some short term effects include:  Increased Heart Rate  Hallucinations or Delusions  Nausea & Vomiting  Loss of Coordination  Slurred Speech

SHORT/LONG TERM EFFECTS Inhalants are very accessible and found around homes, people do not realize how incredibly addictive they become if abused over a period of time, people who become addicted to inhalants are likely to become long term users, some long term effects include:  Brain Damage  Muscle Weakness  Depression  Frequent Headaches & Nosebleeds  Loss of Smell or Hearing

  9. HOW INHALANTS KILL “Sudden Sniffing Death”– Most common cause of death by inhalants. The heart beats quickly and irregularly and suddenly stops (also known as: cardiac arrest). This can happen even the first time a person tries inhalants. Asphyxia – Toxic fumes quickly replace oxygen in the lungs so person stops breathing Suicide – As a result of the long term effect of depression Choking- User can choke on his or her own vomit after inhalation
