SPN I – Notecard 6Using “ser” with adjectives • Adjectives- words you use to describe something or someone • Carlos es simpático. • Ana es simapática. • In Spanish the subject pronoun isn’t always needed: • ¿Cómo es el profesor? Es bajo. • To say what someone is not like just put NO in front of the verb. • No soy tonto. Soy inteligente.

  2. SPN I – Notecard 7Gender and adjective agreement • All nouns and pronouns in Spanish have gender. Masculine or Feminine. • Adjectives describe nouns so they have masculine and feminine forms. • Raúl es romántico. Mari es romántica. • Adjectives that end in “e” do not change. • Raúl es inteligente. Mari es inteligente.

  3. SPN I – Notecard 7Gender and adjective agreement • Types of adjectives to watch out for: • Inteligente: ends in “e” does not change • Intelectual: ends in consonant does not change • Trabajador: ends in “or” add “-a” for fem.

They must be singular or plural. • Adjectives that end in vowels: add “S” • Adjectives that end in consonants: add “es” • José es alto. José y Juan son altos. • If the group is guys and girls use the MASCULINE form of the adjective. • Carlos y Ana son románticos.

SPN I – Notecard 8Question formation • To ask a question raise the pitch of your voice at the end of the question. • A question looks just like a statement with question marks at both ends. • Eres extrovertido. ¿Eres extrovertido? • The subject may go before OR after the verb. • ¿La profesora es simpática? ¿Es simpática la profesora? • Use “no” twice to answer a question. • First time: “no” • Second time “not”
