Ishmael: What’s happening?!?!
Try to understand that we’re learning about Ishmael’s PHILOSOPHY about humans… PHILOSOPHY = A theory or way of thinking Hitler’s Philosophy (or story): The Aryan race in Germany was mistreated by other races and deprived of their rightful place in the world as the master of all races and should take extreme measures to rise to the top
There are two separate cultures in this world, Takers and Leavers: Takers = “civilized” people, people who live in cities, use advanced technology and rely on convenience Leavers = “primitive” people, “savages” who live off the land and in the wild **Think of the examples from the PowerPoint
We, as Takers, are captives of a story…
The Story of the Takers (the following are not “facts”, but “myths”) ????? Any guesses? The creation of man was the pinnacle or the end product of evolution. ?
Hunting & gathering (Nomads; Leavers) Agriculture & domesticated animals = stable communities Division of labor/Specialized workers Technology Trade & Cities (Takers) (Any of this sound familiar?)
Ishmael says that Takers… • Think the world was made for us and our destiny is to rule it; the world “needs” man • See the world as a “human life-support system” and use and manipulate (change) it as we see fit Consequences There will be a price to pay for believing this and living this way… BUT because the gods “created man to rule the world”, the destruction and our grim future is not our own fault. We can blame it on the gods!
Keep in mind that Ishmael is not saying all of this is true or that it’s the right way to live. He is asking the narrator to reevaluate what he has been told by his Taker culture. Ishmael disapproves of what most humans believe about their species and how they live.
I hope these PowerPoints (and explanations from your classmates) helped. If not… PLEASE come see me for help next week! -ELO on B-days (room 311) -After school -E-mail
