  3. The Problem Chronic pain: • Affects millions worldwide • Decreases well-being and productivity • Interferes with rest and appetite • Prolongs recovery from illness and hospital stays • Decreases quality of life • Often under-treated • Large burden on health care system

  7. Pain Research at NIH Pain research across all of the NIH Institutes and Centers explores: • Basic mechanisms of the pain response • Pain management and treatment • Individual differences • Emotional and biobehavioral aspects
