Expertise and Hobbies • Annual meteorology courses with verbal and written exams • Daily meteorology briefings • Astronomy courses in High School and College • Astronomy is a major hobby • Physics is also a major area of Knowledge • Graduate of RPI
What I Saw • Flying from Egypt to Saudi Arabia • Early morning flight • About 45 miles ahead of us • Couldn’t paint on Radar • Climbed impossibly high • AWACS was “unusually silent”
So What Was It? Would you believe me if I had claimed it was a UFO?
Our Brains • Our brains are always trying to make sense of data, but often gets it wrong • Expecting to see something will also lead us to give attributes to something that may not be so • It will make mistakes, even if we “know” better • There are thousands of examples you can look up and experience for yourself • We evolved on the plains at an altitude of about 5’ feet and at walking sped, our current world quite often confounds our senses
Conclusion • Thought about it more • My initial impression was mistaken • Eventually figured it out • But would I had been taken as a “Competent Witness”?
