  1. Controlled Assessment – WJEC Geography spec B Improving marks for APPLICATION in the Enquiry Geographical theories! Geographical concepts! Links to my case studies!

  2. Improving marks for APPLICATION in the Enquiry For the most part, students receive little or no advice about AO2 – ‘Application’ in the guidance sheets developed in schools to support the Enquiry Controlled Assessment – WJEC Geography spec B The aim of this CPD session is to further develop your thinking in order to maximise opportunities to access Level 3 in the assessment criteria

  3. Improving marks for APPLICATION in the Enquiry Level 3 – AO2 – Application (see page 31 of the spec): The candidate is able to.............. Controlled Assessment – WJEC Geography spec B • apply their K & U of the Enquiry to their • wider geographical study in relation to ....... • geographical ideas / concepts / theories • make links with other locations (case • studies) • and then contextualise their • findings to wider geographical • questions

  4. Improving marks for APPLICATION in the Enquiry Think of the tasks developed at your school .......... Controlled Assessment – WJEC Geography spec B In your own mind, how is ‘application’ likely to manifest itself in the introduction / the body of the Enquiry / the conclusion? How might the advice given in your guidance sheets prompt candidates to explore this aspect of the Enquiry? How might the advice given in the research and consolidation phase reinforce the need to explore ‘application’?

  5. Improving marks for APPLICATION in the Enquiry An example...................... Controlled Assessment – WJEC Geography spec B Not all coastal management schemes are effective Hypothesis: “The sea defences between Cromer and Overstrand are inadequate”

  6. “The sea defences between Cromer and Overstrand are inadequate” With reference to AO2 – Application, I might expect to see my candidates making brief reference to ........ • the principles of marine erosion / deposition / transportation • .... Is this stretch of coast typical / atypical? Controlled Assessment – WJEC Geography spec B • the principles of sub-aerial processes active within cliffs • .... Is this stretch of coast typical / atypical? • the range of coastal defence systems available .... Why • have N. Norfolk DC selected specific coastal defence • systems for this location? • the wider debate about coastal defence strategies across • the UK – “hold the line / retreat from the line” .... What / Why • have NNDC decided to .......? • case study material looking for similarities (Holderness) • and differences (Hurst Castle Spit) between the locations • future options and the notion of sustainability

  7. Improving marks for APPLICATION in the Enquiry Now it’s your turn! All of the tasks listed on the next slide are currently being developed within centres. Suggest how you might expect candidates to reflect ‘application’ in their write-up Work in small groups (2 / 3), select just one of the tasks and record your findings Please be prepared to share your findings with the wider group. Controlled Assessment – WJEC Geography spec B

  8. Improving marks for APPLICATION in the Enquiry “The quality of life for commuters to central Norwich is higher in the village of Poringland than in the suburb of Thorpe” Controlled Assessment – WJEC Geography spec B “The diversity and range of shopping services in Wycombe is greater than in Marlow” “A wide range of systems have been introduced to manage the river at Boscastle. The scheme is welcomed by all residents and visitors” “Tourism in Ironbridge is managed effectively” “The redundant Crane industrial site in south-east Ipswich is ideal for the development of a new Waitrose and John Lewis retail complex”

  9. Improving marks for APPLICATION in the Enquiry Please share your findings with the wider group. Controlled Assessment – WJEC Geography spec B A summary of the outcomes will be published on the WJEC website Your challenge is to reconsider the guidance sheets you have already developed for your Enquiry tasks. Have you maximised the opportunities for acquiring Level 3 in AO2?
