Student Grade Expectations vs. Results Among a sample group of participating Map-Works institutions • 80% of students expect a GPA of 3.0 or higher • 51% earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher • 30% of students earned a GPA below 2.5 • More than 50% of students earned a GPA lower than they expected
Student Study Patterns Student reported hours spent studying outside of class per week Less than 5 hours: 21% 5-10 hours: 39% 11-20 hours: 26% 20 or more hours: 14% 56% of students respond affirmatively to the question, “Do you study enough to earn good grades?”
Class Attendance How often do you attend class? Attend all classes: 61% (average GPA 3.03) Missed 1: 24% (average GPA 2.62) Missed a few: 15% (average GPA 2.11) Missed frequently: <1% (average GPA 1.32) Only 51% of students’ responses indicate “advanced academic behaviors”
Student Optimism about Grades • When asked what GPA they expect at the end of the term, first-year students significantly overestimate grades…even in November
Recommendations • Share grade data with students (how many students earn a B average, C average, etc. in the first semester) • Show correlations between positive academic behaviors and grades/persistence • Put students in contact with peer leaders who can “share their stories” (more powerful than faculty or staff interventions)
Recommendations cont. • Help students focus on small, process-based goals (rather than grade goals or long-term plans for career) • Make good study habits transparent: what do both strong and poor study habits look like? • Find alternatives to email in communicating with students
