THIRD annual meeting • First meeting (18 October 2016) covered the mission of hrca as a new non-profit and our plans for the future • Initial Board of directors elections were held • Second meeting (19 December 2017) covered changes to our bylaws (voted on by members) and rotating elections for the board of directors, as well as updating members on our programs, financial status, etc. • Meeting called to order!
President’s annual report2017-2018 • Mission area: competitive chess club, youth • Hampton roads scholastic chess club maintained a roster of 125 kids, with a long, running wait list that averages 40-50 kids at any given time • Kids raised ratings collectively thousands of points – now 34 kids rated over 700 (12 over 1100!) from humble beginnings in 2014 • Expanded from eight to nine ability groups (added the guppies) • Top kids increased to ratings over 1500 (6 kids) • Hrscc kids on school chess teams winning trophies even at state championships (about 40 kids attended) • Many kids played at spring nationals, their first national event experience • Many kids receiving private coaching • Gaining ground in the state, but rome wasn’t built in a day • Will always maintain philosophy of fun first -- even if that means slower gains on nova
President’s annual report2017-2018 • Mission area: competitive chess club, adult / all ages • Hampton roads chess club welcomed many new members and regained its strength after taking a huge hit when it lost the Norfolk synagogue site (near death experience) • Peninsula chess club (loosely affiliated with hrca) also thriving • Provides venue for advanced kids • Lower rated adults able to be involved • Exciting new events in the schedule for 2019: tom belke

President’s annual report2017-2018 • Mission area: school chess • Slowly but surely… • Up and running • Grace academy homeschool cooperative (6 years) • Old donation school (VBCPS) – second year, large program, highly competitive • Trantwood elementary (VBCPS) – second year, now both team and club levels • Sherwood forest elementary (NPS) – second year • Granby elementary (NPS) – second year • St Gregory the great school – new program • NKA homeschool collective – new program • Providing direct support to, but not running: • Nandua Scholastic Chess (Eastern Shore Schools) • Woodstock Elementary (VBCPS) • Kingston Elementary (VBCPS) • A few more schools In discussions for January start • We need you to ask your school for a club!
President’s annual report2017-2018 • Mission Area: Chess for Veterans • Donated sets to retreat center in Pennsylvania • Working on partnerships with American Legion, DAV, and VA for Free programs (Need your Help!) • Mission Area: Chess for SENIORS • Working on partnership with VB Parks and Rec (Need your Help!) • Mission Area: Chess for Disabilities • Sponsored Player for World Junior Chess Championship for the Disabled • Purchased voice clock and worked with USCF to modify rules to prioritize its use over other clocks in games with blind players • USCF modified rules to increase authority for blind players’ assistants based on our input • Worked with USCF Accessibility Committee on new accommodations for players with autism • Called a “learning lab” for disability accommodations by US Chess • Mission area: Chess for Girls • Working with VCF to Plan Women’s and Girls’ events in 2019 • Planning Girls Chess Knights – Need VENUES (Need your Help!)
President’s annual report2017-2018 • Mission area: at-risk youth • Portsmouth summer camp chess program – second year • VB Oceanfront At-Risk Youth (Short Lived) • Working on program at alternative school in VB • Working on Juvenile Detention Programs • Mission area: Other chess programs • Boy scout chess merit badges – individual and group sessions • North Suffolk Library Chess Club (Mary Elizabeth Baesler) • Anyone can start a club – we will provide support (e.g. gear, chesskid accounts) • Working on partnership with N.I.C.E. (Norfolk Initiative for Chess Excellence) to support programs at slover library, including homeschool program
President’s annual report2017-2018 • 2018-2019 Plans • sustain hrscc; Continue to grow hrcc, pcc, and support new clubs • HRSCC Peninsula Satellite club in planning stages • Continue to Expand school chess programs gradually • Pilot more programs for seniors, veterans, disabled, girls, and at-risk youth • Move forward with chess center plans!!! • Business plan • Fundraising • Corporate sponsorship • Benefactors • Public-private partnership • Could use help from any members with expertise (progress is stalling)
HRSCC 2019: The Big Announcement • HRSCC is changing in 2019!!! • HRSCC is now school-year only • Summers are optional. You will not lose your slot if you do not participate. You will not pay for summer to hold your slot for fall. • Same time and place for summer, but now HRCA Summer Chess Academy • Open to the Public, HRSCC players welcome • Coach Jay’s Chess Academy curriculum (belt system) • Coaches will all be paid at the school chess rate ($25/hour) • Sessions will consist of 90 minutes of training only (no tournaments or ladder) • Fees announced and registration open in spring (Ballpark $75-100/kid) • Week-long summer camp TBD • Annual Re-Registration for HRSCC Required, and will begin in early May for September. $20 Registration fee due at that time to claim your Fall slot. • VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENTS (once per month per family or 9 total slots) ARE MANDATORY. FAILURE TO COMPLETE YOUR VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENTS FOR HRSCC THIS SEASON WILL MAKE YOU INELIGIBLE FOR FALL REGISTRATION. YOUR SLOTS WILL BE GIVEN TO FAMILIES ON THE WAIT LIST.
Annual financial report2017-2018 • Starting Balance: 9/1/17 = $8,219.52 • Ending Balance: 8/31/18 = $10,300.71 • Detailed report available on request (a few copies tonight) • Schlich scholarships available – ask for details • Fundraising • Chess hustling fundraiser at MacArthur Mall • Capital campaign will launch this fiscal year • Ideas welcome • Bottom line: slowly growing our funds to realize our future plans!

Board of director elections • Tom Belke, Rey Herrera (Secretary, Replaced Bryan Flores), and Julie Wells (Vice President) have one year left on their terms • Ernest schlich, Cheryl havens (Treasurer), and Jack Bustillos (Replaced Jeff Forbes) are up for re-election of their two-year terms • Staggered elections (half the board elected annually) • President always serves one year term • Candidate statements • Choose president (no other volunteers???) • Write-ins allowed, check box next to name • Ballots being handed out, turn in before end of night
