Characteristics of Ebola • This is a viral disease • Symptoms: High fever, muscle pain, red eyes vomiting bloody, black liquid, holes in blood vessels • It was never in the USA • First seen in Zaire, a disease that erupted in the rain forest, in the town of Nzara. • Here twenty thousand people died. • Ebola outbreaks occurred in Africa from 1976-1995. • Death rate of crab eating macaques in Roston, Virginia caused by Ebola tripled in one year.
How is the disease spread (1) • One way of it being spread is through Nosocomical Infections, diseases that originate or occur in a hospital or hospital-like setting. • If one patient has the disease it may spread to others, because of the lack of good hygiene in some of these hospitals in Africa.
How disease is Spread (2) • Another way is being spread though the body fluids of the people who are infected, and as before, this is spread in hospitals. • Transmission of the Ebola virus has also occurred by handling sick or dead infected wild animals (chimpanzees, gorillas, monkeys, forest antelope, fruit bats).
Treatment……………………… • Education: Speak to hospital staff and make sure they know how to handle Ebola. • Isolation: Ebola patients are isolated in private rooms • Stopping the spread: Officers ask around for news of Ebola victims who have not sought treatment by hospital. • Community education: Local Volunteers travel through the community and explain symptoms. Encourage to get help. • Sometimes antibiotics like Penicillin is used to kill the virus from spreading.
Current Research on Ebola • Scientists hope to find a cure for Ebola. • There is a special type of bat called the “African-fruit-eating” bat which does not die from Ebolavirus after being infected. • So they are trying to make a vaccine pertaining to the bat’s immune system. • Scientists are also highly encouraging Quarantine, so the Ebola virus cannot be spread as easily.
Most susecptible • Most of the 20-30 age group seems to be particularly susceptible. • People living close to rain forests are susceptible to Ebola • People in unsanitary countries such as Zaire and Sudan are susceptible to this disease. • Also people with weakened immune systems, or more specifically the children are also susceptible to this disease.
History • First seen in 1976 DRC, a mysterious disease erupted in the rain forest near the town of Nzara. • Twenty thousand people died here. • Ebola outbreaks occurred in Africa from 1976-1995 • Also happened in Cote D’Ivore and Gabon. • So far 150 deaths in Sudan has been associated with Ebola.
