Purpose: The purpose of this lab was to use our knowledge of Boyl’s equation to find the pressure of the bottle we worked with.
Materials: • Acid bottle • Graduated cylinder • Funnel • Clamp • Rubber stopper • 2 Beakers • Water column • Ring Stand
First, we filled the acid bottle with water, then we poured it into the graduated cylinder, dumping it out after we reached 1 Liter, and repeating this process, until the bottle was completely empty. This was done to calculate the mass of the bottle.
Next, we looked at the barometer and recorded the pressure of the room.
Then, we fixed the acid bottle under the rubber stopper, and made sure that it was on tightly (Without using too much pressure)
We then measured, with a meter stick, the length of the lab from the floor to the top of the funnel, then converted this measurement to mm.
Then, we began pouring the water into the acid bottle from the funnel. Making sure that the funnel did not overflow.
Then, we made sure that the water in the funnel was back at the marked line.
Lastly, we placed the clamp onto the tube, ending the experiment.
Results: • Volume of Acid Bottle: 2.54L or 2,540 mL • Height of lab from ground to top: 1,435 mm • Pressure in room during the lab: 765 mm Hg • Height of water after poured into bottle: 33mm
Conclusion: The purpose of this lab was successfully attained. A noticeable error that was made in the video of the lab, but not in the actual lab itself was the spilling of the water out of the acid bottle in the process of pouring it into the graduated cylinder. Had this been done in the actual lab, our results would have been greatly affected. Some concepts of chemistry that were applied in this lab were using our knowledge of Boyle’s law, which states that volume and pressure are indirectly proportional.
