  1. STANDARD GADE GEOGRAPHY WEATHER Lesley Monk Balfron High School Session 2005.6

  2. 3 STANDARD GRADE GEOGRAPHY WEATHER Read page 18, section 3E. There are seven methods of gathering data-they are shown in the handout. Read page 19, section 3F. Answer the questions below in proper sentences. R P Q • Where is the Meteorological Office in Britain? • In what way do computers help create a forecast? • What jobs do people do in forecasting? • Where are forecasts sent? S

  3. 4 STANDARD GRADE GEOGRAPHY WEATHER FORECASTING. Most of us get our weather forecast from the television. On the handout is a table showing the symbols used by the media to show different types of weather on their maps. Watch! Some symbols are special colours- your teacher will tell you which!

  4. 5 STANDARD GRADE GEOGRAPHY WEATHER This is a past paper exam question for you to try in class or at home, depending on the time. THIS IS A GENERAL LEVEL QUESTION. This question is worth 4 marks, and you need to give at leasttwo elements in your answer.( I’d do three or four! ) Answer it on lined paper and hand it in before going on with the show. The next slide has a sample answer of the highest quality- copy it onto handout 4 in the space left for this after trying the question for yourself. Notice the mention of the name of the day each time, and the quoting of actual data!

  5. STANDARD GRADE GEOGRAPHY WEATHER • The wind speed increased, from 10-15 km.p.h on Friday to 40-45 km.p.h on Saturday. • The wind direction changed from a north-easterly on Friday to a southerly on Saturday. • On Friday the area had darker clouds but by Saturday there was much lighter cloud. • The temperatures on Friday were 9 or 10 degrees C, and by Saturday they had risen to 13 degrees C. • On Friday there was no sunshine at all, but Saturday had many sunny intervals. • On Friday there was quite a lot of rain but on Saturday there was little rain and it was mostly dry.

  6. STANDARD GRADE GEOGRAPHY WEATHER NOTE ABOUT BULLET POINTS AND LISTS! In the assessments for Standard Grade, bullet points are only acceptable when they are extended. By this we mean that they have to fully explain/ describe/ answer the question asked. (Look back to the your copied answer to see this has been done.) One, two and three-word points cannot possibly do this adequately, and are therefore not acceptable. For this reason, lists are also no good unless they are extended. Proper sentences remain the best way of answering questions to gain full marks!

  7. 5 STANDARD GRADE GEOGRAPHY WEATHER Read page 19, section 3H about weather map station symbols. Discuss them in class. There is a handout of these to stick into your jotter. YOU WILL HAVE TO KNOW THESE SYMBOLS OFF BY HEART FOR THE EXAMS! THERE WILL NOT BE A KEY IN THE EXAM.

  9. A 12 C . 7 -4 . . B STANDARD GRADE GEOGRAPHY WEATHER Here are some coded weather messages- can you de-code them? HINT; The wind direction blows along the line INTO the centre of the circle!

  10. STANDARD GRADE GEOGRAPHY WEATHER Here are the station symbols in use on a map of Western Europe. There are many more symbols than those being displayed on this chart. A weather chart with some symbols marked on it.
