  1. STANDARD GADE GEOGRAPHY WEATHER Lesley Monk Balfron High School Session 2005.6

  2. STANDARD GRADE GEOGRAPHY WEATHER ENQUIRY SKILLS AND WEATHER- gathering Turn to page 3 of the textbook. Copy the heading and first two sentences for section 1B. Now make your own copy of table 1.1, which shows the main ways of GATHERING weather data. When you copy this table, use a coloured pen/ pencil for the terms highlighted in bold in the book- these are the correct names of the techniques which you will need to use.

  3. STANDARD GRADE GEOGRAPHY WEATHER In weather studies, the gathering questions are about the instruments that measure the elements; *their names, *how they work, *what unit they are measured in, *where they are sited. Other methods of getting data, like satellites etc., come into this section too.

  4. STANDARD GRADE GEOGRAPHY WEATHER JUSTIFICATION This is an important part of answering an ES question. It is where you say WHY you have chosen to use that particular gathering technique rather than any of the others. NOTE:- justifications are usually worth twice the marks given for only naming the techniques! At Foundation, you will not need to do this at all. At General, you will need to give one or two brief but clear reasons. At Credit you will need to give three or four well- explained reasons, depending on the question value.

  5. STANDARD GRADE GEOGRAPHY WEATHER Justification question;-What is so good about the gathering technique you have chosen to use? You should say;- • Data was gathered by you so it is primary ( first-hand) data. • Data can seldom be found from any other place/ source. • Data is very up-to-date.

  6. STANDARD GRADE GEOGRAPHY WEATHER ENQUIRY SKILLS AND WEATHER- processing In weather studies, the processing questions are about the graphs and reports that analyse the data; their name and why they are the correct type for this data. At General and Credit you will be expected to give a description of the presentation method/ graph and say what would be shown on each axis or what would be in a report, if that was the method chosen.

  7. STANDARD GRADE GEOGRAPHY WEATHER In an exam, you will never be asked to draw a complete graph for weather data, although you may be asked to complete the last one or two columns of one already begun. You do need to know how to draw them, however, and we will be practicing drawing them in class.

  8. 7 6 STANDARD GRADE GEOGRAPHY WEATHER Read pages 4 and 5 of the textbook. As you read each of the sections, copy the title and the text beforethe bullet points. (Do not copy the references to figure numbers, nor the last sentence of each. ) This handout will show you a special type of weather graph and what can be shown on it. Take a copy of the handout which illustrates the different types of graph on the pages. Note that these types of graph are used throughout geography- not just for weather!

  9. STANDARD GRADE GEOGRAPHY WEATHER Justification question;-What is so good about the processing technique you have chosen to use? • It shows the data clearly for the reader. • It is easy to see any patterns/ trends/relationships/ comparisons in the data. • It can be enhanced by the use of colour. • Three dimensional graphs can show complex data more clearly. Remember to say why you have used the type of graph that you have!

  10. STANDARD GRADE GEOGRAPHY WEATHER QUICK TEST TIME! Now try the Foundation and General questions starting on page 7 of the textbook. If you find these easy and finish quickly, go on to try the Credit questions on page 8. Remember always to call a technique by its proper name and to say a little about how you will use it in this example.

  11. STANDARD GRADE GEOGRAPHY WEATHER TRY THIS You have gathered data about the amount of precipitation in Balfron every day of the summer holidays, and have been asked to process it to explain its pattern- if there is one! What technique would you use and why would you use it? Answer in your jotter under the heading ‘TRIAL ANSWER-PROCESSING QUESTION’

  12. STANDARD GRADE GEOGRAPHY WEATHER SAMPLE ANSWER • The best technique to use here would be to draw a bar graph. • This type is used to show data that is not related to readings on either side of the one being looked at. • It is clear and easy for the reader to understand. • Relationships, comparisons and trends can be easily seen. • Complex data can be shown by the use of colour, multiple bars on one axis or by 3D bars with 3 scales.

  13. 8 9 STANDARD GRADE GEOGRAPHY WEATHER Pick up the handout of the weather data from Balfron. Your task is to;- 1; process the information in the correct way and 2; write a brief report to explain why you did it the way you did. Can I get some help, please?
