  3. Issues in Society • Poverty • Prostitution • Alcohol abuse • Gambling • Bad sanitation & general dirtiness! • Poor/dangerous working conditions • Low wages • Child labor • Lack of education • Corruption in private businesses • Corruption in government

  5. What is it? • An effort to reform the ills in society • Most of the “ills” were created in some way by industrialization and urbanization

  6. Progressive Goals • Protect the people socially & economically • Make society more “moral” • Reform the economy – less corruption • Reform the government – give power back to the people • Also make society more efficient…. • Restore “traditional/rural” American values

  7. Main Progressive Goals/How to reform the “ills” • Give the people a more direct role in government • Guarantee Americans more economic opportunity • Have the government play a greater social and economic role in society to help the poor
