  5. How did Railroad impact Plains Indians? • Way of life ended • Killing buffalo • Americans stole land • War with Americans • Reservations

  6. Impact of R.R. - Ranchers • Motivation • MONEY!! • Huge market for beef in cities • Open Range = Lg. amount of grassland used for grazing

  7. Impact of R.R. - Ranchers • Way of Life • Long drive = cowboys drove herds of cattle to R.R. shipping centers • Dangerous life • Many formers slaves became cowboys

  8. Impact of R.R. - Miners • Motivation • Gold, silver, copper = $ • Gold Rush in CA, and Dakota territory • Silver in Nevada • R.R. takes them their by the thousands!!!

  9. Impact of R.R. - Miners • Way of life • Thousands live in mining towns • Numerous businesses to serve them (made more $ than miners) • Towns very unstable and crude- no law • Large claims = New digging machines

  10. Impact of Technology - Farmers • Farmers Life very Difficult • unable to survive without technological help • Use Ch. 17.3 to fill out guided notes for a grade
