  2. History • Originally established and sponsored by the National Catholic Business Education Association • Active through the early ‘80s to ‘90s • November 2005 NBEA appointed a task force to establish a national honor society for business education MBEA 2010

  3. National Business Honor Society • Official honor society for secondary business education students • Established in 2008 • Schools may now charter a chapter MBEA 2010

  4. Purpose • To promote and recognize academic achievement in business education, leadership skills, and character development • To help members grow ethically and socially by promoting and encouraging an interest in business • To encourage member involvement in service learning initiatives MBEA 2010

  5. School Eligibility • Public or independent secondary schools offering business education • All business education teachers must be current NBEA members • Business curriculum must be reflective of NBEA standards MBEA 2010

  6. Student Eligibility • Junior or senior class standing • Completed or currently enrolled in third business course • National minimum standard GPA (on a 4.0 scale) • 3.5 GPA in business courses • 3.0 GPA overall • Local chapters may raise GPA requirements • Selection by local membership committee MBEA 2010

  7. Starting a Chapter • Write chapter bylaws • Submit the charter fee • Establish local chapter board • Submit an annual chapter update • Submit an annual renewal fee MBEA 2010

Starting a Chapter • Decide who will be the lead adviser • Review the chapter start-up kit • Available at nbea.org • About NBEA link • National Business Honor Society • Write your chapter bylaws • Samples provided in Start-up kit • Submit the charter application along with the charter fee, list of business courses, and chapter bylaws MBEA 2010

  9. Charter Approval • Charters are approved four times during the year • Charter information must be at NBEA headquarters before: • October 1 • December 1 • February 1 • April 1 MBEA 2010

  10. Charter Fees • Initial charter fee • $100 payable to NBEA • Renewal Fee • $50 payable to NBEA • Not required during school year in which chapter was chartered MBEA 2010

  11. Chapter Activities • Elect local officers • Conduct an installation ceremony • Participate in service activities • Offer insignia items to your members MBEA 2010

  12. Student Fees • Membership is free unless a chapter charges local chapter dues • A maximum of $20 may be charged by the local chapter MBEA 2010

  13. After Your Chapter is Approved. . . • Chapter charter • Membership certificates for each member • Promotional materials as they become available • Insignia items available for purchase • Society colors • Hunter green and silver MBEA 2010

  14. Student Recognition • Member certificates for each student sent from NBEA headquarters to the adviser • Installation ceremony at the local level • Names published on the NBEA Web site • Names published in the NBEA Business Education Forum MBEA 2010
