Office Safety • New technology brings with it a set of health and safety concerns • These concerns must be addressed to have a safe and healthy work environment
Falls: The Most Common Office Accident • The following can help stop a fall before it happens: • Be sure the pathway is clear before you walk • Close drawers completely after every use • Avoid excessive bending, twisting, and leaning backwards while seated • Secure electrical cords and wires away from walkways • Always use a stepladder for overhead reaching • Clean up spills immediately • Pickup objects co-workers may have left on the floor • Report loose carpeting or damaged flooring • Never carry anything that obscures your vision • Wear stable shoes with non-slip soles
Small, light loads (stacks of files, boxes of computer paper, books) can wreak havoc on your back, neck, and shoulders if you use your body incorrectly when you lift them When lifting from the floor, squat close to the load and lift by straightening your legs. Let your leg muscles, not your back muscles, do the work Strains and Overexertion
Workstation Ergonomics • Fitting the workplace to the workers by modifying or redesigning the job, workstation, tool, or environment • The key to comfort is in maintaining the body in a relaxed, neutral position
Adjust the height of the chair’s seat such that the thighs are horizontal while the feet are flat on the floor Adjust the back rest vertically so that it’s support fits the curvature of your lower back Place the mouse next to the keyboard tray Adjust the height of the keyboard such that the fingers rest on the keyboard home row when the arm is to the side, elbow at 90 degrees, and the wrist straight Adjust the height of the monitor such that the top of the screen is a eye level Arranging Your WorkStation to Fit You
Electrical Safety • Types of Electrical Hazards: • Ungrounded Equipment • Overloaded outlets • Unsafe equipment • Frayed cords • Improper placement of cords • Cords across walkways • Blocking electrical panel doors • Working on live equipment
Fire Drills • Follow posted instructions and listen to announcements • Evacuate building as instructed • Stay with current class until drill is complete
Tornado Drills • Follow posted instructions and listen to announcements • This class meets in the Spirit Room (behind main gym) • Stay with current class until drill is complete
School Name IOC Drills • Students will follow announcements • Doors will be locked, with safety chain in place, lights off • Stay away from windows and doors • Remain quiet as possible, DO NOT use cell phones • IOC “Intruder On Campus”
