“It takes a village to raise a child” is a popular proverb. Community, teachers and family consisting of parents, grandparents, other relatives would play a pivotal role in the child’s education. However, today this ancient model has been narrowed down to only two people in child’s life – parents and teachers. The question is who influences a child more?

Parents (not Teachers) Are the Most Important Influence on a Child’s Education “It takes a village to raise a child” is a popular proverb. Community, teachers and family consisting of parents, grandparents, other relatives would play a pivotal role in the child’s education. However, today this ancient model has been narrowed down to only two people in child’s life – parents and teachers. The question is who influences a child more? Mostly, the key task the school sees for itself is to provide information and skills. But a critical part of raising a child is imparting values – and parents play a disproportionate role in that. That is where education starts. Education is an ongoing process and much of the learning continues even out of the classroom. While there is no doubt that the onus of stimulating the child’s interest in various subject areas and to simplify the learning process to meet different abilities of students is on the teachers, however the motivation to retain the knowledge and to use it suitably is inspired undoubtedly by parents. Their role in setting the challenges and trusting their ability to overcome these challenges is irreplaceable. That means that parents need to find the time, and be interested and involved in their kids learning and growth. It is not something one can outsource to a school. It is not a client-vendor relationship. Ideally, it is a partnership. Going by numerous reports, students turn out to be better achiever and more successful where parents are actively participating in their child’s education. For instance, according to a research by Nancy Hill, a professor at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education, parents play an important role in setting expectations and making connections between their child’s current behaviour and future goals! Similar study has been published in the Review of Economics and Statistics of MIT Press Journals. Copyright © 2016 KyaSchool, All Rights Reserved
There are several ways for parents to be involved in their kids’ education. Importance of Education – Demonstrate the idea that education is important so that they recognize the value of an education. Inculcate good study habits and monitor homework. Read to your Child – Read a book or tell stories. Pause in between and encourage them to narrate what would happen next? It develops their imagination. Talk to your Child – Discuss about how your day has been – some achievements and challenges. Kids understand broader range of experiences and learn problem-solving techniques. Spend time with them – Social and emotional learnings also play a very important role in academic achievements. Do activities with them, play sports, visit museums, cook together, go for walks, dance, etc. Inculcate a hobby – Share a passion or love for an interest that will bring a smile to their face even in rough times. Learning from nature – Take kids out to experience natural surroundings and learn at an unhurried yet miraculous ways. An interesting example is from the popular blog Uncity. In it a father who gave up city life to move to a rural setup says about his kids education, “But above all this, the biggest factor is the time I am able to spend with my kids – be it reading together with them, going on picnics, playing games, plucking fruit or doing small woodworking projects. Being a father in person beats being a father in absentia hands down. And I’ve been both. Since we have left the city I have much more time for them, and they both notice and appreciate the change. We all love the time we now get to spend together. And that’s hard for even the best school to compete with.” (https://uncityblog.wordpress.com/2016/05/28/leave-the-city-and-ruin-the-kids-future/) More parents are now also choosing to home-school rather than engaging a regular school due to different reasons be it dissatisfaction with the available education options or they find the regular school structure too confining. Probably the most striking example is Eric Demaine who left school at the age of 7, travelled throughout the US with his father and home-schooled. Eight years and a Ph.D. later, he became MIT’s youngest professor. (http://kyaschool.com/blog/experimental-education-home-schooling/) Copyright © 2016 KyaSchool, All Rights Reserved
As Thomas Friedman rightly pointed out, “There’s no question that a great teacher can make a huge difference in a student’s achievement, and we need to recruit, train and reward more such teachers. But here’s what some new studies are also showing: We need better parents. Parents more focused on their children’s education can also make a huge difference in a student’s achievement!” Copyright © 2016 KyaSchool, All Rights Reserved
