Schema Theory Our schema are set up like file folders in a file cabinet. Schema are organized ‘compartments’ where we store organized pieces of information. As we learn new information, we try to place it in a ‘folder’ to which it is best suited. If we put it in the wrong place, we’ll have trouble retrieving it when we need it.
Piaget’s Notion of EQUILIBRATION When we see or experience something that doesn’t make sense to us, we try to figure it out. We try to achieve a balance between our understanding of the world and the experiences we have. This is called equilibration - we seek equilibrium or balance.
Cognitive Development As we learn new things, we often run into situations where we are adding new information to existing schemas. EQUILIBRATION Often, we simply take new information into our existing schemas quite easily because it fits just fine. But, sometimes our schema needs to change and expand in order to make the new information fit.
Association When we encounter new information, we look for ways to connect, or associate, it with what we already know.
Assimilation When information is added to our schema easily, we all this We simply assimilate the new information into our existing schema. Assimilation

Cognitive Development Now, examine each ‘schema’ one at a time. For each schema; • circle the most common words that everyone understood (ASSIMILATION) • put a square around any words that needed some explanation for one or more group members (ACCOMODATION)
