  2. In 1917, Britain issued the Balfour Declaration, which pledged support for a Jewish national home in Palestine. • Both Jews and Arabs claimed Jerusalem as a holy site.

  3. Jewish migration to Palestine increased after WWII. • The Holocaust increased support for a Jewish homeland; Britain, realizing future conflict, turned over its mandate to the UN….

  4. 1. Goodbye, Palestine!

  5. In 1947, the UN drew up a plan to divide Palestine into an Arab state and a Jewish state.

  6. The Arabs saw it as a plan to relocate Jews onto Arab territory.

  7. In 1948, Britain withdrew and Jews proclaimed the independent state of Israel, which the U.S. and U.S.S.R. recognized. • Arab states attacked Israel, but Israel won and increased its territory.

  8. 2. Wars and Peace?

  9. In 1967, during the Six-Day War, Israel overran the Sinai Peninsula, the Golan Heights, and Jerusalem!

  10. The Israel Defense Force is a conscript army, meaning that it mandates two to three-year service for 18-year-old men and women.

  11. In 1973, Egypt and Syria attacked Israel on Yom Kippur. • In 1979, the Camp David Accords ensured peace between Egypt and Israel. • In 1994, Israel and Jordan made a peace agreement.

  13. The Arab-Israeli wars uprooted 700,000 Arabs from Palestine.

  14. UN-supplied shelters have become permanent homes.

  15. The PLO (Palestine Liberation Organization), led by Yasir Arafat, swore to get its land back!

  16. 4. Terrorism

  17. In 1993, direct talks between the PLO and Israel led to limited results. • There have been suicide bombings and attacks from either side.

  18. Until the Palestinians are granted their homeland, there will never be peace.
