BEED Mission External Focus: Promote growth in the economic base of the weather and climate enterprise by outreach to the user community, broadly defined History Prior to the formation of the Commission on the Weather and Climate Enterprise, the BEED was the AMS Economic Development Committee, which reported to the AMS Executive Committee

BEED Primary Activities • Organize regular yearly events • Users Forum • Takes place at the AMS Annual Meeting (~1 day) • Brings together the broader user community and the weather and climate enterprise • Focus on local / regional users in vicinity of Annual Meeting location • Speakers asked to focus on industry needs for weather and climate information, recent successes and failures in the use of products, and other aspects of products and services as they relate to the end user and decision maker • Public-Private Partnership Forum (formerly “Corporate Forum”) • Takes place each spring in Washington, D.C. (1 ½ day) • Brings together key members of the community, government agencies, and policy makers • The primary goal of the Forum is to identify business opportunities • Discussion topics include ongoing programs, new initiatives, business opportunities, and policy issues • Work with WCEC, BEP, BEC to plan and organize meetings, review statements, and participate in additional AMS activities

BEED Primary Activities (cont’d) • The BEED also supports the activities of its committees • Identify and facilitate opportunities for engagement between the weather and climate community and the transportation, energy, and water resources sectors • Sponsor / attend conferences and web casts • Organize / co-chair AMS forums, sessions, and short courses • Improve AMS committee websites and other methods of distributing committee information

Committees - Accomplishments • Intelligent Transportation Systems & Surface Transportation Committee: • Held Short Course on Surface Transportation Meteorology at the AMS Annual Meeting (20 Jan. 2008) • Organized Surface Transportation Weather session in the 24th Conference on International Information and Processing Systems (IIPS) at the AMS Annual Meeting (Jan. 2008) • Held joint meeting with the Intelligent Transportation Society of America’s Weather Information & Applications Special Interest Group (23 Jan. 2008) • Co-Sponsored 4th National Conference on Surface Transportation Weather held jointly with TRB Snow & Ice Control Technology Conference (18-20 June 2008, Indianapolis) • Energy Committee: • Organized and chaired the session on Extreme Weather, Climate Change, and the Energy Industry for the Sixth Users Forum at the AMS Annual Meeting (22 Jan. 2008)

Seventh Users Forum13 January 2009 • Focus: Weather, Climate, and Water Resources in the Urban Environment • Invite speakers from southwest region / Phoenix area • Draft Agenda Topics • Session A: “Weather and Short-Term Decision Making in Water Resource Operations” • Salt River Project, Central Arizona Project, metropolitan water districts • Session B: “Climate and Long-Term Planning of Water Resources” • Efficient, sustainable utilization of runoff water at large and small-scale levels • City planning, structural design, decision support systems: impacts of potential climate change, paleo-climate research • “How sure is a 100 yr water supply?”: uncertainty and climate change in Arizona planning • NOAA planning: inputs from the Water Resource community
