UNIDO Model: Affordable Electricity from Locally Produced Straight Vegetable Oil (SVO) • The issue • Decentralised power generation from renewable energy sources can reduce energy poverty in a sustainable manner • Affordable and locally manufactured technological solutions have not been promoted sufficiently • Advantages of the UNIDO Model • Affordable diesel generator sets can easily be modified with SVO technology for a capacity of 5-20 kWel • Untreated, straight vegetable oil can be used: palm oil, sunflower oil, jathropha • oil, cotton seed oil, etc. • Complete overhaul of engine can be done by local experts for US$ 200 • Easy and cheap maintenance by local mechanics possible • No emission of fossil CO2 • Entire value creation process remains in the region Special Event at the UNEP GC UNEP and UNIDO: Enhancing Synergies Demonstration of SVO-generator and inauguration by UNIDO Director General, Mr. Kandeh K.
