  2. A is for Asheville • Asheville had a tropical storm on the days of July 15th and 16th, 1916 which caused $ 3,000,000 in damage. • Asheville, the town, began in 1784. • Asheville used to be named Morristown but was renamed “Asheville” in 1797. By: Mollie

  3. B is for Black Bears • Black Bears are usually black but can be brown and mistaken for Grizzlies. • Black Bears’ natural foods are plants, fruits, roots, and acorns. • Black Bears live in forests, meadows, and swamps. By: Sean By: Sean By: Sean

  4. C is for Coastal Plain • Fayetteville is a city located in the Coastal Plain of North Carolina. As of 2000 census, the city had a total population of 121,015. • Cape Fear is a coastal plain and tidewater region found in the Coastal Plain of North Carolina centered about the city of Wilmington. • The Sandhills is a strip of ancient beach dunes which divides the Piedmont from the Coastal Plain.   5. D is for Dogwood • In 1941 The General Assembly confirmed Dogwood as the state flower. • It’s blossoms come in early spring and continue into summer. • Dogwoods can be found in all parts of the state from the mountains to the coast. By: Caitlyn

E is for Emerald • These minerals include some of the most valuable and unique gems in the world. • The largest Emerald ever found in North Carolina was found at Hiddenite, near Statesville. • When cut to 13.14 carats, the stone was valued at the time at $100,000 and became the largest and finest cut emerald on the continent.   7. F is for Fraser Fir • The Fraser Fir is the official State Christmas Tree of NC. • The Fraser Fir is grown in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. • North Carolina tree farmers make lots of money from people from other states buying Fraser Firs. By: Kellen

  8. G is for Gray Squirrel • The Gray Squirrel is the state mammal. • The Gray Squirrel eats acorns, nuts, seeds, fruits, corn, peanuts, and insects. • Gray Squirrels inhabit city parks, suburbs, and forests. By: McKenna

H is for Honey Bee • The General Assembly in 1973 designated the Honey Bee as the official state insect. • Honey Bees are responsible for more than $2,000,000 worth of honey in this state. • The greatest value of Honey Bees is their role as a major contributor to North Carolina crops.   10. I is for Poison Ivy • Poison Ivy is a plant in the family with three leaves, anacardiaceous. • It is known for its ability to produce urushiol or something that causes an itching rash. • There are different kinds of plants that make people itch like Poison Oak. By: Michael

J is for Jamestown Settlement • Jamestown settlement was a re-creation of the first permanent colony in America. • Jamestown was named James Fort to honor the king. • About 120 colonists had landed in Jamestown in May 1607.By the end of the first winter in America more than half of the colonists died.   12. K is for Kitty Hawk • Kitty Hawk is on a sandy barrier island that is part of the Outer Banks. • Kitty Hawk is best known as the town that the Wright Brothers lived in. • On Kitty Hawk there is the Wright Brothers National Memorial. By: Jordan

  13. L is for Buck Leonard • Buck Leonard was born on September 8, 1907 in Rocky Mount in North Carolina. • Leonard was one of the greatest baseball players ever. • After he played part time for years he joined the Homestead Grays in Pennsylvania when he was 27. By: LeAri

  14. M is for Milk • The General Assembly of 1987 adopted milk as the official state beverage. • People consume over 143 million gallons of milk each year. • Dairy products rank 9th among major farm commodities in North Carolina. By: Molly

N is for Nickname • When Carolina was divided in 1710, the section called south Carolina and the northern part or older part north Carolina. • The word Carolina is from the word Carolus, the Latin form of Charles. • There are two nicknames, The Old North State and The Tar Heel State.   16. O is for Ocracoke Island Lighthouse • The Ocracoke Island Lighthouse is 75 feet tall. • It was built in 1823. • The lighthouse is visible to ships from 14 miles out at sea. By: Peyton

  17. P is for Plott Hound • The Plott Hound was officially adopted as our state dog on August, 12, 1989. • The Plott Hound breed originated in North Carolina. • The Plott Hound is named after Jonathan Plott. By: Madeline

  18. Q is for Queen Anne's Revenge • The famous pirate Blackbeard named his flagship after Queen Anne’s name. • His ship went aground in 1718. • In 1996 a company in North Carolina found a ship and people think it is Queen Anne’s Revenge. By: Katerina

  19. R is for Raleigh • Raleigh was named after Sir Walter Raleigh. • People moved the capital from New Bern to Raleigh. • The three cities that make the “Research Triangle” are Durham, Chapel Hill, and Raleigh. By: Avi

  20. S is for Dean Smith • By the spring of 1997, Dean Smith had won 877 victories. • Dean Smith taught Michael Jordan how to play basketball. • As coach of the Carolina Tarheels, he won 2 NCAA championship tournaments. By: Scott

  21. T is for Thomas Wolfe • Thomas Wolfe was born on October 3, 1900 in Asheville, North Carolina. • As a boy, Thomas Wolfe wanted to be a writer. • His book “Look Homeward, Angel,” was published in 1929. By: Jessa

  22. U is for University of North Carolina • The University of North Carolina is in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. • UNC is the oldest public university in the United States. • UNC has good athletes, most known for men’s basketball and women’s soccer. By: Elizabeth

  23. V is for George Vanderbilt • George Vanderbilt hired two distinguished designers of the 19th century to help build the Biltmore house. • He hired architect Richard Hunt and landscape designer Fredrick Olmsted. • It took 6 years to build the Biltmore house and in 1895 it still wasn’t finished.   24. W is for Winston Salem • Winston Salem has a population of 185,776 people. • It is the fifth largest city in N.C. • It is located in the Piedmont region where lots of people go. By: Kiran

X is for eXtra facts • State Facts: Capital - Raleigh, Tree - Pine, Reptile - Eastern Box Turtle, Rock - Granite, Colors- Red and Blue, Dog – Plott Hound, Beverage - Milk, Nickname - The Tar Heel State • Mount Mitchell is the highest Mountain east of the Mississippi River. • Mount Mitchell is located in the Black Mountains of Western North Carolina.   26. Y is for Yadkin River • The Yadkin River is one of the longest rivers in NC. • The Yadkin River rises in the north western part of NC, near Blue Ridge Parkway. • Yadkin County, NC is named after the Yadkin River. By: Sophia

  27. Z is for Zoo • The North Carolina Zoo is 1,458 acres. It is the largest walk-through natural habitat zoo in the country. • The North Carolina Zoo opened in 1976. • The North Carolina Zoo is located in Asheboro in Randolph County. By: Brodie
