Suggestion P. Lebrun to PAF • Following the outcome of the LUMI06 workshop and our brief dicussion of last evening, I believe we should aim at settling rapidly the normal conducting (NC)/superconducting (SC) choice for PS2, so that further studies can be better focussed. • Considering the reliability/availability/flexibility requirements of PS2, I agree that the starting point should be that of a moderately fast pulsed NC synchrotron. Given this, the SC alternative would probably be limited to that of superferric (not pipetron) magnets, in a machine with similar circumference as the NC option…..
Study in PS2 WG • Construction aspects: • Magnet construction and installation cost • Cryogenic system and installation cost • NC magnet water cooling system and installation cost • Electrical installation requirements • Power converter specifications and cost • Cost of quench protection and machine protection systems
Study in PS2 WG • Operational Aspects (for ~15 years running): • Energy and power consumption • Operation of the cryogenic system • Maintenance cost of cryogenic system/water cooling systems • Cooling-down and warming-up time and influence on shutdown/short stops. • Quench limit estimate (protons, ions) and impact on machine design • Recovery time after a magnet quench • Time to open the cryogenic system to install/remove equipment (magnet replacement time) • Vacuum quality • Operational flexibility / limitation • Tuning flexibility / limitation
Next Steps • Group in AT will provide input on SF magnets + cryogenics • NC considerations based on March 06 estimates • PO aspects addressed by AB/PO • Work started
