VARIABILITY IN LEARNER • LANGUAGE • learner language is systematic • it can’t be validated that learner language is systematic, but variability is also systematic • learners also vary the linguistic form they use in accordance with situational context • another important factor that accounts for the systematic nature of variability is the psycholinguistic context • learners manifest considerable variability in their production of an L2

Learner do 2 or more forms in free variations • It is possible that free variation constitutes an essential stage in the acquisition of grammatical structures • important to recognize the general sequence of acquisition applies to specific grammatical features • not all of the learners complete their stage
