Aberfan -- Oct 21st 1966 At 9.15 am on Friday, October 21, 1966 a waste tip slid down a mountainside into the mining village of Aberfan, near Merthyr Tydfil in South Wales. It first destroyed a farm cottage in its path, killing all the occupants. At Pantglas Junior School, just below, the children had just returned to their classes after singing All Things Bright and Beautiful at their assembly. It was sunny on the mountain but foggy in the village, with visibility about 50 yards. The slide engulfed the school and about 20 houses in the village before coming to rest. 144 people died in the Aberfan disaster: 116 of them were school children. About half of the children at Pantglas Junior School, and five of their teachers, were killed. Life in Wales, Yesterday and Today

Aberfan Disaster – Tribunal ReportAugust 1967 Excerpts:- ……the Aberfan Disaster is a terrifying tale of bungling ineptitude by many men charged with tasks for which they were totally unfitted, of failure to heed clear warnings, and of total lack of direction from above. Not villains but decent men, led astray by foolishness or by ignorance or by both in combination, are responsible for what happened at Aberfan It concluded: Blame for the disaster rests upon the National Coal Board. This is shared ….among NCB headquarters, the South Western Divisional Board, and certain individuals… Life in Wales, Yesterday and Today

The Welsh Passion – RugbyBackground to the Greatest Match Background:- • New Zealand All Blacks were undefeated in their 3 month tour of the UK • They had beaten England, Scotland and Wales and tied with Ireland • The British Lions (All Star team from Great Britain and Ireland) had toured New Zealand in 1971, and won the series • The Barbarians were virtually the same team as played for the British Lions in New Zealand • The Barbarians were allowed to wear their club or country shorts and socks, together with the Hooped Jersey signifying the Barbarians • The best and most exciting country team in the UK, was the Welsh one • There were 7 Welsh Players in the Barbarian’s side • The Fly Half for the Barbarians, Phil Bennett had replaced an icon, Barry John, in the Welsh Team but had played poorly in the loss to New Zealand • Watch for him gathering up the ball after a New Zealand kick ahead • All of the 7 Welshmen on the team are involved in what happens next • This game was played in Cardiff Arms Park on Jan 27th 1973 • Listen to the Crowd • Watch for a Lineout and a Scrum • Get ready to see a Welsh icon in action – Gareth Edwards • Enjoy!
