Joshua means “the Lord saves” because the Lord brought them out of their wandering in the desert. This book is about Joshua, the Israelite, becoming the new leader and guiding the people into the promised land. God helps them to thrive, and dominate their enemies. God weeded out the unfaithful, such as Achan, so that they could be God’s people, and carry out God’s commands in the world. They defeated those who didn’t obey God’s commands.
A woman named Rahabhelped Joshua’s spies, hiding them from the king and his men up on her roof. She asked them to save her and her family in return for helping them. She knew that they were powerful because they had the Lord on their side.
