  1. Construction Methods Lecture 10 Compaction Equipment and Procedures

  2. Compaction Equipment and Procedures • Types of Compaction Equipment

  3. Compaction Equipment and Procedures • Types of Compaction Equipment

  4. Compaction Equipment and Procedures • Sheepsfoot Rollers • Sheepsfoot rollers are drums with a large number of projections. • These rollers are most effective in compacting clayey soils. • The area of each of these projections may range from 25 to 85cm2

  5. Compaction Equipment and Procedures • Sheepsfoot Rollers

  6. Compaction Equipment and Procedures • Tamping Foot Compactor

  7. Compaction Equipment and Procedures • Tamping Foot Compactor

  8. Compaction Equipment and Procedures • Tamping Foot Compactor • It is suitable for compacting all fined-grained soils, but is generally not suitable for use on cohesionless granular soils. • The compacted depth is limited to 20cm • This type roller does not adequately compact the upper 5 to 8 cm of the soil, therefore, for the last lift it should be followed with a pneumatic or smooth-drum roller.

  9. Compaction Equipment and Procedures • Tamping Foot Compactor

  10. Compaction Equipment and Procedures • Vibratory Rollers • Vibratory rollers are very efficient in compacting granular soils. • Vibrators can be attached to the following rollers • plate compactors, • smooth drum rollers, and • tamping foot rollers • Principles of vibratory rollers • The vibration is produced by rotating off-center weights

  11. Compaction Equipment and Procedures • Smooth Drum Vibratory Soil Compactor

  12. Compaction Equipment and Procedures • Smooth Drum Vibratory Soil Compactor • This roller uses vibratory action in conjunction with ballast weight of the drum to compact. • One of the most effective means of attaining density for cohesionless materials. • It is a relatively light roller therefore maximum loose-lift depth is 25cm

  13. Compaction Equipment and Procedures • Vibratory Tamping Foot Compactor

  14. Compaction Equipment and Procedures • Dual-Drum Vibratory Compactor • Use this roller to compact cohesionless subgrade, base courses, wearing surfaces, and asphalt

  15. Compaction Equipment and Procedures • Compaction in Confined Areas

  16. Compaction Equipment and Procedures • Compaction in Confined Areas

  17. Compaction Equipment and Procedures • Compaction in Confined Areas

  18. Compaction Equipment and Procedures • Dynamic Compaction • This process primarily consists of dropping a heavy weight repeatedly on the ground at regular intervals. • The weight of the hammer varies over a range of 8 to 35 tons. • The height of the hammer drop varies between 10 to 30 meter. • Can achieve densification to a depths of about 10 meter

  19. Compaction Equipment and Procedures • Selection of Compaction Equipment

  20. Compaction Equipment and Procedures • Selection of Compaction Equipment
