  2. More News…. Things to Practice: Popcorn Words Popcorn words are words we call “sight words” in kindergarten. We will have two new popcorn words a week and it will be listed on the newsletter for you. We encourage you to make flashcards of the words to practice each night. -Address, phone number, birthday -Cutting -Recognizing Name and practice writing with the first letter capital and the rest lowercase -Remembering bus or walker info -Lunch account numbers Things To know: More Kindergarten Spelling…. Kindergarten Spelling: -When children are first learning how to write, they often use “invented spelling.” Otherwise known as phonetic spelling, invented spelling is when children listen to the sounds they hear in words and write down the letters that make those sounds. Words like "cat" or "pin" are usually spelled correctly under the invented system, but irregular words like “special” or “the” are often incorrect. - It can be frustrating to stand by and watch your child spell incorrectly. But using invented spelling is an important stage in your child’s development as a writer. In first grade, especially, children are still learning and practicing which letters make which sounds. Using invented spelling is a great way for children to practice which letter-sounds go with which letter! Reading Tips for Parents: Play sound games. Practice blending sounds into words. Ask “Can you guess what this word is? m - o - p.” Hold each sound longer than normal. “If I can think it … I can say it. If I can say it… I can write it. If I can write it… I can read it. And so can others!” ~unknown
