Pathfinder Climate Data Records • Pathfinder Version 5 being used extensively in re-analysis products • Reprocessing capability being transferred to NODC • Version 6 will consist of both L2P and L3 products • Uncertainties to be developed similar to MODIS hypercube approach • Improvements to quality tests being evaluated
GCOS SST and SI Working Group • Intercomparison site being populated now: • AVHRR Pathfinder V5, AVHRR Pathfinder V4 • Operational AVHRR • HadSST2 • Kaplan • ERSST, OISSTv2, New Daily OI • Weekly, one-degree and monthly five-degree • Connecting historical SST reconstructions with the satellite record • First phase (all products in GHRSST L4) by Jan 1
Example L4 Re-Analyses • Reynolds Daily OI - Daily 25 km • Two versions, one available back to 1985 using Pathfinder • Improvements under development New OI Using Pathfinder AVHRR New OI Using Pathfinder AVHRR + AMSR-E Dick Reynolds NOAA NCDC
Example L4 Re-Analyses • Met Office OSTIA Reanalysis • Using AVHRR Pathfinder back to 1985 • Inputs compiled in 2008… John Stark and Craig Donlon Met Office, UK
GHRSST Multi Product Ensemble • Effort underway to inter-compare various GHRSST and related L4 products • Based on an ensemble median approach (http://www.ghrsst-pp.org/Todays-global-SST.html) • Currently includes: Met Office OSTIA SST NCEP RTG_SST_HR SST NAVOCEANO NAVO K10 SST observations JMA MGDSST SST RSS RSS MW Fusion SST RSS RSS MW+IR Fusion SST FNMOC GHRSST-PP SST and sea Ice MERSEA ODYSSEA SST NOAA AVHRR OI (Reynolds Daily OI)
Status of GHRSST L2P Reprocessing Version 2 in Spring 2008, ARC Version 3 in 2009 Andy Harris and Eileen Maturi w/ NCDC, in 2008 Pathfinder RSS NOAA Scientific Data Stewardship - Evans, Kilpatrick, and Casey - commenced July 2007 RSS
SST CDR Priorities for 2008 • Initiate OSTIA Reanalysis back to 1985 • Link historical and satellite analyses through intercomparison (both GCOS and GMPE) • Close out Pathfinder V5 for 1985-2007, and include 1981-1984 • Establish initial AVHRR Pathfinder capability at NODC ==> Version 6 • Find a means of creating retrospective MODIS L2Ps • (A)ATSR Version 2
