  2. W.N.C, A Solution to end the Arms Race? • Conducted in 1921 in Washinton D.C. • A.K.A Post-war experiment at disarmament • Sought to end the naval arms race between Britain, Japan and U.S by limiting of naval armament • Major Naval Powers Attended • United States • British Kingdom • France • Italy • Japan

  3. The Spirit of the Agreement To… • Maintain Peace in the Pacific • Reduce burdens of armament in competition • Put an end to Japanese expansion

  4. Letter of the Agreement: What did it accomplish? • Many Treaties… • Four Power Treaty • Five Power Treaty (Washington Naval Treaty) • Nine Power Treaty • In Summary, • Fleets were limited in size and armament • Ceased ‘battle ship’ production • Open Door Policy (free trade) in China

  5. Immediate Effects • From naval limitations, participating nations were able to save a lot of money • Calmed tensions in the Pacific and preserved peace in the 1920s • Britain and U.S. benefitted from abolition of Anglo – Japanese Alliance

  6. Problems of the Agreement and why it was not effective in the long run!! • There were loopholes; with excess funds, nations constructed smaller, more effective vessels that were not touched in the letter of the agreement • Japan’s fleet was concentrated; it ultimately enabled Rise of Japanese Empire as a naval power leading up to WWII, after Japan ended participation in 1936
