Between 1921 and 1922 • UK, Japan, France, Italy to talk about reduction of the Navy • Largest Naval powers gathered to discuss navel disarmament, especially in regards to growing tensions in East Asia • China, Belgium, Netherlands, Portugal to discuss the situation in the Far East • Five Power Treaty • Four Power Treaty • Nine Power Treaty Introduction
UK, US, France, Japan, Italy • Had to maintain a ratio of war set tonnage • US and UK had higher tonnage because they had navies in two oceans • Called on signatories by stop building capital ships and reduction of size by scrapping older ships • Article XIX recognized US, British and Japanese bases in Pacific but outlawed expansion • Some classes of ships were unrestricted, therefore leading the powers back to negotiating table in 1927 and 1930 to cover these loopholes in the agreements Five Power Treaty
US, France, Britain and Japan • Replaced the Anglo-Japanese treaty • Guaranteed the rights rights of signatories to possessions in Asia • Agreed to defend each other in the event of an external attack, particularly in East Asia • By ending the Anglo-Japanese treaty countries would not be obliged to fight, but to discuss Four Power Treaty
Promised each of the signatories respect China’s territorial integrity • US Open door trade in China • Collapsed in 1931 due to Japanese invasion of Manchuria Nine Power Treaty
