Agenda • Project learning • Specifications • Axiomatic design • Comparisons • Proposed designs • Questions Source: http://www.wallingfordvt.com/planning_&_zoning.htm

Project Learning • Toured Blue Water’s facilities • Interviewed operator • Talked with external wastewater plant engineer • Observed/Analyzed current loading procedure • Research on media transport systems Source: http://www.smart-kit.com/scategory/study-skills/
Opportunity Statement Problem Statement Develop an easy to use, safe, cost-effective method to charge the pilot filters. A problem in the current loading process of the pilot filters is creating a safety hazard to workers, costing Blue Water excessive money, and time.
Current loading procedure Sand arrives on-site, on trailer Sand is moved next to the filter Filter is primed with water. Forklift/Crane lifts operator and sand Operator loads sandinto top of filter. Operator climbs ladder with buckets of sand
Axiomatic Design Axiomatic design is a process used to create functional requirements from customer needs, develop these into design parameters, and then determine process variables.
Vertical Screw Pros Cons • Will move the sand to the height needed • Can move sand at 300 SCFM • Cost- $15,000 for a carbon steel vertical screw • Difficult to set up and move • Can be a safety issue • High maintenance cost • Requires a large space to operate Source: http://www.martinsprocket.com
Air lift Pros Cons • Safe to operate • Light weight • Cost effective • Low maintenance • Blue Water uses technology • System requires that the lift be 50% submerged • Transfer rate is slower than desired • Must be close to filter
Venturi System http://www.penberthy-online.com/literature/jets/DIM%20-%201701.pdf
Venturi System Pros Cons • Material does not come into contact with moving parts • Very efficient • Low maintenance cost • Uncomplicated design • Easily removes sand from filter • Need large volume of water • Requires high pressure water pump
Positive Displacement Pump Pros Cons • Low maintenance • Low cost • Versatile • Can be air powered • High flow rate • Wear in hoses • Sand must be in a slurry Source: http://www.process-controls.com/John_Brooks_Company/diaphragmpumps.htm
Dynamic pump system Pros Cons • Low cost • Versatile • Easy to use • High flow rates • Wear due to slurry on moving parts • Wear in hoses • Sand must be in a slurry Source: http://www.heavypump.com/Productshow.asp?ArticleID=17
Venturi System • Flow rate of 6.9 gpm, with 10 gpm water needed to achieve this • Estimated time to charge CF3: 44 min
Positive Displacement System • Air–operated double diaphragm pump • Flow rate over 4 gpm with heads of 30 ft • Estimated time to charge CF3: 75 min
Dynamic System • Gas-operated impeller pump • Flow rate of 158 gpm, with head of 95 ft • Estimated time to charge CF3: < 2 min
Future Work • Calculate specifications for each component • Find vendors and detailed costs • Create fabrication drawings • Fabricate components or order components • Test completed system
