  1. Dinosaurs By L Lopes 2005

  2. Dinosaurs • Dinosaurs are reptiles that lived millions of years ago. • Dinosaur means terrible lizard.

  3. When did dinosaurs live? What did Dinosaurs eat?

  4. The climate was very dry and warm. The land was low-lying with plains, deserts, swamps and forests. Dinosaurs appeared for the first time. Some dinosaurs that lived in the Triassic period are: Coelophysis Dimetrodon Plateosaurus Massospondylus Teratosaurus Life in Triassic Times

  5. Large areas of the earth were covered by oceans during this time. The climate was cool and moist but it gradually became warmer and drier. Dinosaurs that lived in the Jurassic period are: Diplodocus Stegosaurus Apatosaurus Allosaurus Brachiosaurus Archaeopteryx Life in Jurassic Times

  6. The seas grew larger, then dried up at the end of the period. Lots of flowering plants appeared. Mountain ranges were formed. Dinosaurs that lived in the cretaceous period are: Ankylosaurus Triceratops Pteranodon Gallimimus Tyrannosaurus Iguanodon Life in Cretaceous times

  7. What did dinosaurs eat? • Carnivores are meat eaters. • Herbivores are plant eaters. • Omnivores are both plant and meat eaters. When did they live? Dinosaur information

  9. Dimetrodon • Dimetrodon was not a dinosaur, but a Pelycosaur. • It walked on four legs and was a meat eater. • The sail was believed to have acted as a solar heater then later in the day as a cooler.

  10. Compsognathus • Compsognathus may have been warm-blooded. • It had scales covering its body that became the first true feathers. • They could run quickly through the undergrowth. • Compsognathus ate plants, small reptiles and mammals.

  11. Oviraptor • Oviraptor means “egg thief”. • Oviraptor was an omnivore. • It had a parrot like head with strong jaws that could crush hard objects. • It lived in the Cretaceous period.

  12. Stegosaurus • The bony plates on its back protected it from attacks by meat eaters. • Two pairs of powerful spikes at the end of the dinosaurs tail were used as a weapon. • Stegosaurus had teeth in the back of its mouth used for chewing plants. • One of the strongest dinosaurs and was nicknamed “cover lizard”.

  13. Triceratops • Name means “three-horned face”. • It was a plant eater that ripped up plants with its turtle like beak. • Three horns on its head protected the Triceratops from meat-eating dinosaurs. • It probably charged at its enemies like a rhinoceros does.

  14. Tyrannosaurus • Name means “tyrant lizard”. • Lived in the late cretaceous period. • It grew 12 metres high. • Its teeth were up to 18 cm long. • Its hands had only two fingers.

  15. Ankylosaurus • Ankylosaurus was the most fully armoured reptile of all time. • Its teeth, used for chewing plants, were all in the back of its jaw. • It had a big, bony club at the end of its tail to fight off enemies. • It was a peaceful, slow moving dinosaur.

  16. Deinonychus • Deinonychus was a meat eater. • It has razor sharp claws on its rear feet that it used as vicious weapons. • Its small front legs were adapted for grasping and holding. • It walked only on two toes on each foot.

  17. Velociraptor • Lived during the cretaceous period. • Its name means “rapid robber”. • Veliciraptor was a carnivore and had knife-sharp teeth. • It could jump up to 4 metres to reach its prey.

  19. Pteranodon • Pteranodon was the largest flying creature of all time. • It flew above the oceans, swooping to catch sea creatures in its powerful beak. • Pteranodon had a huge bony crest on the back of its skull. • It had a huge, toothless beak.

  20. Pterosaur • Name means “winged lizard”. • Ate fish and it had a 7 metre wingspan. • Lived during the Triassic and Cretaceous periods. • Pterosaurs could glide but could not fly. • It weighed less than 17 kg.

  21. Pterodactylus • Pterodactylus was not a dinosaur. It was a flying reptile. • It name means “winged fingers”. • Pterodactylus was very light with hollow bones. • It had a large brain and good eyesight. • It lived on lakeshores.

  23. Elasmosaurus • Elasmosaurus was a sea creature. • It looked like a turtle with a very long neck and tail. • They could swim, but not dive because they couldn’t lift their flippers high enough. • They used their broad, flat flippers as oars.

  24. Plesiosaurus • Plesiosaurus means “almost a lizard”. • It lived in the Cretaceous period. • Plesiosaurus is related to dinosaurs. • It used its four paddle-like limbs for swimming. • It grew 12 metres long.

  25. Dinosaur FossilsHow do we know that dinosaurs ever existed? • A fossil - part of a dead plant or animal that has been buried and turned as hard as stone by chemicals in the rock. Reptiles of the sea Dinosaur theories

  26. Why did dinosaurs become extinct? There are several theories: Dinosaur fossils Dinosaur activities

  27. Theory 1 • An earthquake shook the earth and killed all the dinosaurs.

  28. Theory 2 • The carnivores ate all the herbivores and then died because they had nothing left to eat.

  29. Theory 3 • A meteor struck the earth and blocked out the suns rays. Everything became very cold and frozen.

  30. Theory 4 • All volcanoes exploded at the same time and killed all the dinosaurs in the lava flow.

  31. Theory 5 • Egg eating dinosaurs ate all of the eggs.
