  1. 2014 PMI Scheduling Conference Presenter: EREZI UTIOME Title: PMP Date: 10 July 2014

  2. Learning Objectives • Learn a new way of capturing project scheduling information • Gain an awareness of the implications of product libraries for BIM • Develop a strategy for integrating project information from a variety of sources (AEC - Case study) www.PMI.org 1 2014 PMI Scheduling Conference

  3. Overview of Concepts Physical attribute: E.g.: Basic, concrete wall, with structural insulation Panel, with Kiln Dried Timber Panel Rainscreen. • “A Building Information Model (BIM) is a digital representation of the functional and physical attributes of a facility”. “A Building Information Model (BIM) is a digital representation of the functional and physical attributes of a facility”. (NIBS, 2007). Functional attributes: E.g.: Functions as a host for: doors, windows, paints, etc. Quality description • “Building Specifications are written descriptions of the quality of the built product and its component products” (NBS, 2011) “Building Specifications are written descriptions of the quality of the built product and its component products” (NBS, 2011). Product description www.PMI.org 2 2014 PMI Scheduling Conference

  4. Establishing the connections • The “I” in BIM establishes the relationship between BIM models and specifications. = The “I” in BIM establishes the relationship between BIM & specifications. Specification data, e.g. Schedules, are essential to BIM information Glass and glazing materials Glass: Glass and glazing materials Glass: Free from defects which detract from appearance or interfere with performance under normal conditions of use. Glazing plastics: Free from surface abrasions, and warranted by the manufacturer for 10 years against yellowing or other colour change, loss of strength and impact resistance, and general deterioration. Glass and glazing materials Glass: Free from defects which detract from appearance or interfere with performance u Several requirements of BIM objects can be derived from specifications e.g.: component attributes, quality requirements, schedules, etc • Several requirements of BIM objects can be derived from specifications e.g.: component attributes, quality requirements, schedules, etc = www.PMI.org 3 2014 PMI Scheduling Conference

  5. Augmenting Schedules • Schedules in BIM can be considered in terms of: • Time • Materials • Materials www.PMI.org 4 2014 PMI Scheduling Conference

  6. Specifications The maximum size of coarse aggregate shall not be less than otherwise specified. Aggregates shall comply with B.S. 882 and shall be free from elongated particles, dust, clay films and other adherent materials. They shall not contain clay lumps exceeding 1% by weight and foundations shall not contain more than 3% by weight of silt. In addition to the above, it is required that the aggregates will not produce a drying shrinkage in any of the concrete uses. Methods of storage must be such as to ensure freedom from intermingling and segregation. Models Problem Overview & Goal drawings concrete mix Schedules www.PMI.org 5 2014 PMI Scheduling Conference

  7. Key Question • How can we leverage Material Schedules from proprietary Building Specifications to augment BIM-based Schedules? www.PMI.org 6 2014 PMI Scheduling Conference

  8. Problem Implications • BIM-derived schedules are generic • It is too time consuming to manually capture proprietary information based on generic BIM object information • By implication, there are increased risks of overruns (cost and time/schedule) for complicated, large-scale projects characterised by frequent changes in material specifications www.PMI.org 7 2014 PMI Scheduling Conference
