  2. The Tongue • Introduction. • The tongue can cause muchharm and also can produce greatgood. • A. “Byyourwordswillbejustified, and byyourwordsyouwillbecondemned,” Matt. 12:37.

  5. The Tongue • I. Some of the principal sins of thetongue. • A. Lying: • tocoveranother sin, • ortoavoidhurtingsomeone’sfeelings, • ortotakeadvantage of others, • ortoavoidproblems (espec. punishment).

The Tongue • Godhates “thelyingtongue,” Prov. 6:17 • Eph. 4:25, “putting away lying, "Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor," for we are members of one another.” • Not lie tobillcollectors (“mama sayssheisnothere”), • tothe IRS, employer, customers; • notsaywe’resick so wewon’thavetogotowork, school, church. Can’tdeceiveGod!

  7. The Tongue • “All liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death,” Rev. 21:8. • B. Gossip, defame, slander. “You shall not go about as a talebearer among your people,” Lev. 19:16.

The Tongue • Prov. 26:20, “For lack of wood the fire goes out, And where there is no talebearer, contention quiets down,” • “a whisperer separates the best of friends,” Prov. 16:28. • “The north wind brings forth rain, And a backbiting tongue an angry countenance,” Prov. 25:23. • So resist the gossiper!

  15. The Tongue • “Faithful are the wounds of a friend, But the kisses of an enemy are deceitful,” Prov. 27:6. • “He who rebukes a man will find more favor afterward Than he who flatters with the tongue,” Prov. 28:23.

  16. The Tongue • D. Cuttingwords. • “A gentle answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger,” Prov. 15:1. • “A wrathfulmanstirs up strife, Buthe whoisslowtoangerallayscontention,” Prov. 15:18. • “Husbands, loveyourwives and do notbebitter (harsh) towardthem,” Col. 3:19.

  17. The Tongue • E. Sarcasm. “There is one who speaks like the piercings of a sword, But the tongue of the wise promotes health,” Prov. 12:18. • “They sharpen their tongues like a serpent”, Ps. 140:3; • “their tongue is a deadly arrow,” Jer. 9:8.

Corruptspeech. “Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification,” Eph. 4:29. • “Neitherfilthiness, norfoolishtalking, norcoarsejesting, which are notfitting, butrathergiving of thanks,” Eph. 5:4. • Sexual jokes, insinuations… • TV, videos replete withcorruptlanguage.

  19. The Tongue • G. Profane use of thename of God. • Hypocriticalswearing, Matt. 23:16-22 • Also saying “My God,” “Jesus Christ” • “You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain,” Ex. 20:7. • “Holy and awesome is His name,” Psalm 111:9.

  20. The Tongue • H. Sowdiscordamongbrethren, one of theseventhingsGodhates, Prov. 6:16-19. • I. Murmur. Complaints, criticismsmadewith a badattitude. • “Do all things without complaining and disputing,” Phil. 2:14; • “Do not speak evil of one another,” James 4:11.

  21. The Tongue • J. Cursing. “Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice,” Eph. 4:31. • Expressionsthat use theterms “hell” and “damn” are curse words. • “Sissycussing” – “Darn,” “Heavens, no” (comparable to “looseswearing”)

Whataboutsimplytalkingtoomuch? • “In the multitude of words sin is not lacking, But he who restrains his lips is wise,” Prov. 10:19. • “Whatshesaysistruthbutshereallyknows a LOT of truth!” • Wedon’thavetotelleverytruthweknow. Thereismuchtruththatshouldnotberepeated. Doesithelp? Edify? Purpose?

  23. The Tongue • “He who guards his mouth preserves his life, But he who opens wide his lips shall have destruction,” Prov. 13:3. • “Even a fool, when he keeps silent, is considered wise,” Prov. 17:28. • “Don’t show yourignorance.”

  24. The Tongue • Withgoodreason, then, James 3:6 says, “and thetongueis a fire; a world of iniquity.” • James 3:2, “Ifanyonedoesnotstumble in word, he is a perfectman, able also tobridlethewholebody.” • James 3:3, “Indeed, weput bits in horses’ mouthsthattheymayobeyus, and weturntheirwholebody.”

  25. The Tongue • II. Wordsthatsave and edify. “But the tongue of the wise promotes health,” Prov. 12:18. • A. Teachthegospel. “thosewhowerescatteredwenteverywherepreachingtheword,” Acts 8:4. • “Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning at this Scripture, preached Jesus to him,” Acts 8:35.

  26. The Tongue • B. Spread knowledge. “The tongue of the wise uses knowledge rightly,” Prov. 15:2; • “The lips of the wise disperse knowledge,” Prov. 15:7. • Relatives, friends of the members do notknowtheBible.

  27. The Tongue • Ifeachpersonoreachfamilywouldhaveonlyonestudy of anhourorhalfanhoureachweek… • The resultwouldbemarvelous. • Therewouldbeconversions, restorations, betterattendance and growth of everykind.

  28. The Tongue • C. Encourageothers. “Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, But a good word makes it glad”, Prov. 12:25. • Think of the “oneanother” passages. • “A man has joy by the answer of his mouth, And a word spoken in due season, how good it is!” Prov. 15:23.

  29. The Tongue • We are capable of speakinggoodwords. • We can impartknowledge, turningonthe light of understanding of manypeople. • Itisonly a matter of doingit!

  30. The Tongue • D. Use thetonguetoexhort (in love). • “exhort one another daily, while it is called "Today," • lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin,” Heb. 3:13. • “A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold In settings of silver,” Prov. 25:11.

  31. The Tongue • E. ConfessChrist, Matt. 10:32. • F. Confesssins, James 5:16; Matt. 3:6 • Notsimply “I havesinned.” • Acts 8:22, “thisyourwickedness.” • Acts 19:18, “confessingtheirdeeds.” • “Ashamed”! SIN iswhat’sshameful! • “Own up toit!” Ifit’s mine, acceptit.

  32. The Tongue • Conclusion. • A. “leteverymanbeswifttohear, slowtospeak, slowtowrath,” James 1:19. • B. “If anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this man's religion is worthless,” James 1:26.
