Verb Tense • Every verb has four basic parts: • Base form, present participle, past and past participle • When the present participle and the past participle forms are used as main verbs (simple predicates) in sentences, they always require a helping verb. • I have parked the car.
Regular Verbs • A regular verb forms the past and past participle by adding –d or –ed to the base form.
Practice • Pages 229-230 Exercise 1 – EVEN ONLY
Irregular Verbs • An irregular verb forms the past and past participle in some other way than by adding –d or –ed to the base form.
Avoid these common errors • Do not use the past form with a helping verb • Has she rode the horse before? (ridden) • Do not use the past participle form without a helping verb. • I sung the national anthem at the game. (have sung) • Do not add –d, -ed, or –t to the base form. • The batter hitted the ball. (hit)

Lie and Lay • The verb lie means to rest, stay, recline or remain in a certain state of position. • Lie NEVER takes an object. • The verb lay means to put something in a place • Lay usually takes an object.

Active and Passive Voice • Voice is the form a verb takes to indicate whether the subject of the verb performs or receives the action. • Action Voice= subject of the verb performs the action. • Passive Voice = subject of the verb receives the action.
Active and Passive Voice • Active: We threw stones across the water. (We performed the action of throwing stones) • Passive: The stones were thrown across the water. (The subject, stones, received the action.
