  6. Volunteers in the Field Goal: • Allocate resources to the field and use volunteers proactively to build capacity and enhance learning in the organization

  7. What it is • World Water Corps is a voluntary arm of Water For People • Uses skills from North America strategically to fill gaps in program work that cannot be filled in-country • Augments and supports, as needed, the capacity of Water For People

  8. What it is not • The World Water Corps is not for volunteers wanting to construct community water supply and sanitation systems!

  9. Building Capacity, not Systems • Are the systems sustainable? • Are all the key local role players involved or just the community and maybe an NGO? • Are back-up issues of maintenance and replacement addressed? • Is it consistent with Water For People’s approach? • Does it undermine local contributions to development? • Is this the best use of Water For People’s network?

  10. Regular Opportunities Monitoring of program work (annual) Evaluations (every country every 3 years) Mapping/Needs Assessments (every 2 years Country-Specific Needs Advocacy/ Communication in Bolivia Building a local NGO’s management capacity in Malawi Hydrogeology in Honduras Opportunities to Enhance Sustainability

  12. WWC Supports WFP Strategic Plan • The World Water Corps is a part of the WFP International Programs • International Programs has five goals that support the WFP Strategic Plan Goals

  13. Strategic Growth Goal By 2011, Water For People programs will provide sustainable water and sanitation services to at least 1,000 new people per day. • WWC volunteer Scoping Teams studied 10 candidate countries and recommended approaches for Board consideration in selection of 5 for expansion in 2007 • Country Program in Dominican Republic is to be piloted as a volunteer-run operation

  14. Program Delivery Goal Water For People will enhance and replicate its successful international programs model to increase its impact within existing program countries and double the number of program countries from five to ten by 2011. • Volunteers conduct Mapping/Needs Assessment in expansion areas • Results of Monitoring, Mapping, and Evaluations are posted on WFP web site, a sector-leading practice

  15. Program Delivery Goal (Cont.) • The WWC committee has a research group that is refining and presenting the WFP best-practice methods • WWC volunteers develop maps and are replacing staff as trainers, editors of reports, and team leads on assignments • WWC is expanding into targeted assignments – mentoring, design, and advocacy, for example • WWC volunteer efforts support and enable the decentralization of International Programs at WFP

  16. Resource Development Goal Water For People will develop the financial resources to support the rapid growth in its programs to achieve annual revenues of $12 million by 2011. • Mapping (especially) and Monitoring using independent volunteers as practiced by WFP is unique and attracting funding • Funding to expand the use of WFP protocols from large NGOs could exceed $5 million in 2008-2010

  17. Organizational Excellence Goal Water For People will advance its mission while striving to exceed a goal of 85% of revenue applied to international programs by 2011. The organization will be consistently ranked in the top tier of NGOs by independent third-party evaluators. • In 2007 the World Water Corps volunteers’ in-kind contributions reduced the WFP overhead rate by 3% • WWC volunteers also believe that we provide considerable staff mentoring and support that reduces overhead cost
