Welcome 2nd Grade! Associative Property Day 2 Click the link to play some fun math games!
Elluminate Rules During the presentation please listen carefully. Try your best. Be respectful of your classmates. If you have a question, please raise your hand or type it in the chat box.
Today we will... 2.8.2.A: Use the concept of equality and concrete objects to demonstrate understanding of the commutative and associative properties. Essential Question: How do I identify the Associative Property, and how does this property help me with my math?
Can you match the key words with their properties? Word Bank The Commutative Property states that you can add numbers in any ______________ to get the same sum. You can also multiply numbers in any _________________ to get the same product. The Associative Property states that you can ________________ numbers in different ways when adding and get the same sum. You can also _______________ numbers in different ways when multiplying and get the same product.
Associative Property of Addition When adding 3 numbers, we can group two numbers together to make it easier to add. Remember to do what is inside of the parentheses first! (5 + 4) + 6 = 15 and 5 + (4 + 6) = 15 We can also show this as one number sentence... (5 + 4) + 6 = 5 + (4 + 6)
Let’s practice! Remember to start with the numbers inside of the parentheses first! + 7 (12 + 8) + 7 = ?
Let’s practice! 6 + 6 + (6 + 4) = ?
Let’s practice! 8 + 8 + (10 + 2) = ?
Associative Property of Multiplication... Just like with addition, we can group numbers to make it easier to multiply! (5 x 2) x 4 = 40 and 5 x (2 x 4) = 40 We can also show this as one number sentence... (5 x 2) x 4 = 5 x (2 x 4)
Let’s review some multiplication strategies... How can I find the answer to 4 x 2? Draw an array Think of your cookies Use a multiplication chart-- let’s take a closer look at this...
How to use a multiplication table... Look for the first number across the top. What is 2 x 4? Follow the numbers until they meet to find your answer! Look for the second number on the left.
Let’s practice! x 6 (3 x 2) x 6 = ?
Let’s practice! x 4 (1 x 5) x 4 = ?
Let’s practice! 8 x 8 x (5 x 2) = ?
Let’s practice the Associative Property! Now we are going to try some multiple choice questions about the associative property. You will use your polling tools to choose A, B, C, or D as your answer.
Find the missing number... 3 + (4 + 5) = (3 + ___) + 5 5 4 3 9
Find the missing number... (5 x 2) x 3 = ___ x (2 x 3) 7 30 5 2
Find the missing number... (5 x 10) x 2 = 5 x (10 x ___) 10 50 5 2
Try this one! If 5 + (7 + 3) = 15, What is (5 + 7) + 3? 12 5 15 20
Try this one! If (2 x 4) x 1 = 8, What is 2 x (4 x 1)? 4 8 9 16
Excellent work!! Now it’s time for you to try some on your own. I will push out the Compass website to you so that you can complete your post test or extension activity..
How to take the pre-test... Log in to Compass with your username and password. Click on Math Assignments. Choose the folder: M2.A.2.8.2_Associative_Post or Extension Complete the post test. When you finish, make sure that you click and then “turn-in” to turn in your test.
