Critical Thinking Part I How did the United States come to be involved in the Korean War?
1945 Allies agreed to temporarily divide Korea along the 38th parallel at the Yalta Conference. After Allies defeat Japan, Russian troops had moved into North Korea as far as the 38th Parallel. American troops had occupied South Korea.
North Korea • Soviet Union set up a communist government in the North with communist leader Kim Il Sung. Communist Dictator Kim Il Sung
South Korea • South Koreans elected Syngman Rhee who had been struggling for Korean independence from Japan for 50 years. American educated South Korean President Syngman Rhee
June 25, 1950 The Korean War started when Communist forces from North Korea invaded South Korea after Sygman Rhee announced that his troops would liberate North Korea.
The UN ordered the invading force to withdraw to the North of the 38th Parallel. On June 27th 1950, the United Nations security council decided to send UN forces under the command of Douglas MacArthur to Korea. (Soviet Union was not present because UN refused to seat a Chinese delegate.) UN forces were quickly forced to the “Pusan Perimeter.” June 27, 1950
Truman Ordered the Seventh Fleet to protect Taiwan where Chaing Kai Shekand a remnant of non-Communist Chinese were in charge. Truman did not ask for congress to declare war because he believed that as Commander in Chief he could order troops into battle.
September, 1950 In a bold move General Macarthur landed forces behind enemy lines at Inchon and the capital of Seoul was quickly taken by UN forces.
Should the UN stop at the 38th Parallel or attempt to conquer the North and unify Korea? When UN Forces passed beyond the 38th parallel, Chinese communists massed a million soldiers who attacked UN forces, pushing UN forces back below the 38th parallel. Oct.- Nov., 1950 Animation
General Douglas MacArthur • MacArthur urged the US to blockade the Chinese coast, bomb the mainland, and help Chaing Kai-shek invade China from Taiwan. • He was ordered to restrict his activities south of the 38th Parallel
On April 11, 1951 MacArthur was fired by President Truman for speaking out against his policy of a limited war. President Harry Truman

Arguments in favor of Truman’s decision • He is the Commander and Chief of the Military • Congress would have probably approved it anyway
Arguments against Truman’s decision • The right to declare war is a right reserved in the constitution for congress. • This is a part of our system of checks and balances • It set a precedent for presidents to send troops into battle without declaring war.
Armistice July 27, 1953 No peace treaty has never been signed to end the war between North and South Korea. The armistice was intended to be a temporary truce.
