Why a wheelbarrow? • Dr. Greiman’s class • Not quite sure which one • Came up with an alternative to the three circles • My analogy • (BUT I DON’T LET MY STUDENTS THINK THIS!) • Three points of support • The “Wheel” is the classroom • A lot easier to use a wheelbarrow than ride a Unicycle • The legs (SAE and FFA) support the “load” of student learning

Le Center 3 yrs ago • .8 FTE • Classroom • ~25 unduplicated students 10-12 • Welding, Ag Construction, Ag Coop (WBL) • Required 8th Grade Class • FFA • Membership of ~20 • “Lets get out of school to taste cheese!" • A-A-H, Open House, Corn Drive, Fair Ag Ed Center • SAE • Huh? • “I think my dad filled out a proficiency thing”

  5. My Wheelbarrow • A small wheelbarrow with a flat tire, one leg missing, and the other leg is mostly rusty • What does your wheelbarrow look like? • Plan of Action: • Pump up the tire so it can be used • Replace the missing leg • Shine up and repaint the other leg

My Rationale and Approach • Classroom • Management & discipline • Relevant agricultural applications of science, math, reading, history, art, and every other class • Connect with students • All students recognize the context of Ag • Much more discipline than previous • Science in CTE Study, CIS HORT, Cooperation with Sp. Ed. in Math, Research papers, Welded Art, managing money

Rationale and Approach • FFA • Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve • The best students help to INFLUENCE the others • Engage the right students (Plant Ideas) • Required certain level of attendance • Passing classes to leave for CDE’s • Sunday evening practices • Awards applications • Take what we do well, and make it greater

Rationale and Approach • SAE • Real-world application to what we are learning in class “Ag is all around us” • Students should be productive • How agriculture influences our lives • Part of classroom grade • SAE project borrowed/stolen from Forest Lake • Adapted slightly • “This is what you COULD do” • Proficiency applications that their parents talk about
