SUDLERSVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL A Title 1 School & Judy Center Partner DECEMBER 2014 Student Art Work Displayed at Comptroller's Office Jazelle Torres' art work, was selected as the Maryland Master's Piece to represent QACPS Elementary Students! Jazelle and her family will be notified by the State Comptroller's Office, and later on this year, there will be a ceremony where she will present her work to Comptroller, Peter Franchot. Congratulations Jazelle! Emily Crossley's Art Work Recognized On November 19, 2014, Emily Crossley from Sudlersville Elementary School received special recognition along with other Queen Anne's County students. Emily was recognized for her excellent work in art. Her art will be displayed at the Queen Anne's County Board of Education at the Superintendent’s Art Gallery. Congratulations to Emily!! Julia Alley, Supervisor, Cassie Hosler, art teacher, Emily Crossley, student, Dr. Carol Williamson, Superintendent, Michele Hampton, principal Bulletin boards are displaying student work. SUDLERSVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL A Title 1 School & Judy Center Partner DECEMBER 2014 SES Student Receives Award at the Board of Education Meeting Jazmyn Cooper was recognized at the Queen Anne’s County Board of Education meeting on November 5, 2014 for standing up against bullying. She received the Hero Award. SES is very proud of Jazmyn!! Sudlersville Elementary Students Participate in Poster Contest Students at Sudlersville Elementary School participated in a school-wide poster contest. The theme of the poster contest was SOAR (Safety, Organization, Active Learning, and Respect). In order to accomplish their goals in school, this is a focus for all students. To further promote this theme, the posters will be displayed in the community. The Hour of Code is a global movement reaching tens of millions of students in 180+ countries. This is an event that will give all of us a chance to see what computer science is all about. Each week, Mrs. Michele Hampton, principal, recognizes exemplary student writing, and students receive an "Author of the Week" certificate. Authors of the Week for November include the following students: Nolan Corcoran and Gracie Troyer Both students are in Ms. Eber's second grade classroom and doing a great job with writing assignments!! MacKenzie Ebling is with her teacher, Mrs. Amy Thren. Matthew Hinefelt, fourth grader, is pictured with his teacher, Mrs. Sarah Rosendale. Kaylee Leager and Chayse Franklin with their teacher, Ms. Alma Davis. The students in second grade enjoyed the new math game “Hundred Grid Tic Tac Toe". Pictured here with their grid are Gracie Troyer, Lea Anderson and Delaney Fox. Teachers learned this game during our recent workshop on November 4 while you were voting! We vote that this game is FUN and educational!

5. SUDLERSVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL A Title 1 School & Judy Center Partner DECEMBER 2014 Grade 2 News Pre-K News Grade 1 News Wow! It is hard to believe it is December already! A huge thank you to all the parents who helped to make our Thanksgiving Feast a success. It was wonderful time for everyone. Now it is time to get ready for the holidays. We will be having our Holiday Party on Thursday, December 18th and Polar Express Day on Friday, December 19th. Please be on the look out for information regarding these two special events. We are still learning about our five senses. The holiday season is a great time of the year to talk with your child about what they see, smell, hear, taste and feel in the world around them. In addition, please continue to work on identifying colors, shapes, letters and numbers (1-10). We would like to wish everyone a happy, healthy and safe holiday! The Pre-k Team First Grade Happenings! We are so excited in first grade! We have many engaging activities in December. We have been writing our class books in our homerooms and most classes will be finishing up with this assignment by the first week of December. Please look for or return envelopes that will be/were sent home about our class book writing. We will be beginning a new unit in Social Studies, called December Celebrations. Children will learn about celebrations that are celebrated in the United States and around the world. We will be going on our next field trip on Friday, December 12th., this trip will be to see a play at Chesapeake College called Sleigh Ride Around the World. We will definitely be in the holiday spirit by then! Please remember those hat and gloves because as long as the temperature is not too cold we will be going out! We hope everyone has a wonderful holiday break! We wish you peace and happiness! During December second grade will continue to work hard on learning more reading and math strategies. We have been learning about place value in math and continue to improve our writing skills. We just started our Science unit on matter. Each December brings a class trip to Coleman’s Tree farm to explore the importance of tree farms for our environment. We will be going on Friday, December 12th at 9am. Please send back your permission slip and money as soon as possible. Celebrating Christmas Around the World will be a focus for second grade this month. Students will learn how the holiday is celebrated in various parts of the world and gain a healthy respect for differences among cultures. Everyone in second grade is has been working very hard. We are well into the second quarter of the year and are proud of how the students are progressing. We appreciate all the support from our parents and encourage you to continue monitoring/helping with H.W. at home. Make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the cold winter days ahead. Label all items with your child’s name. Be sure to encourage the joy of giving and helping others this holiday season. Make the six Character Counts pillars part of your daily lives. Each student is encouraged to log onto IXL and other websites from home to practice reading and math skills. Username and passwords were sent home for several sites that the school has paid for. If you need this information again, please contact the classroom teacher. Also, the Queen Anne’s County Library website has links to wonderful websites free of charge as long as you are a member. We hope you take advantage! Reminder - End of year/holiday celebrations will be held on Thursday, December 18th. Please watch for more information coming home. You may contact your child’s teacher if you’d like to volunteer or help out. Kindergarten News A long vacation is approaching in December. Take advantage of many learning opportunities that happen during the holidays! For example, your child can find words on greeting cards and advertisements and work on counting skills when helping set the table or organizing treats on a tray. It is very important to keep reading to your child during the break. Remember the next Reading Log will be due on January 16th. We would love to have 100% participation from all classes! We have taught students some multiplication games in the classroom. Please continue practicing multiplying at home, you can use dice, a deck of cards, or word of mouth to practice. The field trip deadline is approaching fast. Please have the field trip form & payment submitted to classroom teacher by December 5th. Look for information about holiday parties to be sent out soon. With the cold weather upon us please remember to send your child to school with a winter coat. We will be getting them outside as much as possible until the, dare I say it, "snow" arrives. Students will have math & reading/spelling homework weekly. Please review this with your child. Thank you so much for attending the parent conferences last month. December promises to be a very busy time. Please check your child’s folder for permission slips to attend the field trip to the Baltimore Science Center on Friday, December 19th, 2014. We will also be contacting parents for our winter breakfast celebration that will be held on Thursday, December 18th, 2014. Please remember to have your child wear a heavy jacket, and gloves as well as a hat with the colder temperatures arriving. The teachers are enjoying meeting the students as we have begun rotating classes for Science. As you know, multiplication is a top priority for third graders this month and next. Please continue practicing multiplication facts at home with your child for mastery. Third grade chorus members have been doing a great job during their rehearsals with Mr. Harrison. MARVELOUS MUSIC MEMO Here are a few musical reminders for the month December. Upcoming Performance: Winter Concert: Wednesday, December 17th 6:30 pm Winter Concert performers include the 2ndgrade classes, the Winter Chorus (participating 3rd& 4thgrade students), and the Winter Recorder Club (participating 4thgrade students). Students are to report to SES at 6:00 pm to get ready. All students must remain with parents/guardians until 6:00. At 6:00, students will be permitted to go to the classrooms. The Concert will begin at 6:30 pm. The dress code for ALL performers is nice clothes. Dress pants and skirts/dresses are preferred. Red, white, and green colors are also preferred. No jeans please! Also, please be sure to avoid shirts/tops with any noticeable pictures or writing on them. If you have question about the dress code, please call. Remember, this is a performance and we want to look our best!

7. SUDLERSVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL A Title 1 School & Judy Center Partner DECEMBER 2014 Counselor’s Corner Health Room Brrrr...chilly weather has arrived! If your child needs a warm hat, gloves, a scarf, or a coat, please have them stop by the Counselor's room! Thanks to generous donations from the Chester River Friends and an SES Teacher, we have plenty of warm winter apparel for those in need. There have been several students lately that have been diagnosed with Strep throat and treated. Strep throat is caused by the bacterium called Group A streptococcus and it is usually spread person to person by direct contact. Symptoms may include fever, sore throat, tender and swollen neck glands, not feeling well, and rash. Early recognition, by a throat culture and prompt treatment are very important in order to prevent possible complications. Children with strep infections should be kept home from school until 24 hours after treatment has begun. It is then very important that the medication prescribed by your doctor be taken as instructed. If you suspect a Strep infection in your child consult your family doctor. Here is a preventive tip: Cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing, wash your hands after wiping or blowing your nose, coughing, and sneezing, and avoid sharing eating utensils. Drown those germs! The Judy Center Partnership News Every week our pre-K and Kindergarten children enjoy Judy Center sponsored SEFEL (Social Emotional Foundations of Early Learning) lessons. During those lessons children learn social skills such as: how to solve problems, take turns, share, and identify their emotions and the emotions of others as well as how to appropriately express those emotions. Children also learn how to ask for help when they need it, and how to help their peers if they are able. They learn these skills through children’s literature, songs, role-playing and art. This past week, Sudlersville Elementary School celebrated American Education Week and Grandparents Day! Our pre-K and Kindergarten children showcased their SEFEL skills by performing for parents, grandparents and friends! Their performances included songs demonstrating how to help them develop self-control, develop an awareness of how their actions impact their peers and vice-versa as well as a song about “Golden words, Orange words and Red words”. They shared a story about a boy who was not making good choices and identified when that was happening through “thumbs up behavior signals or thumbs down behavior signals”. We were so proud of the amazing job the children did for everyone! Kiss your brain, friends! Congratulations to Mrs. Thren's 3rd Grade students, who donated 187 items! As the winning class, they will enjoy a class pizza party and each student will receive a $1 School Store certificate. Imagination Library Over 100 children (birth through 4) residing in the Sudlersville area have been enrolled in the Dolly Parton Imagination Library! Below is a list of some that are used: SIT – School Improvement Team SIP – School Improvement Plan HSA – High School Assessment MSDE – Maryland State Department of Education SWIFT – School Wide Integrated Framework for Transformation PBIS – Positive Behavior Interventions and Support SOAR – Safe, Organized, Active Learners, and Respectful PAC – Parent Advisory Committee SpEd – Special Education IEP – Individualized Education Program PST – Pupil Services Team ELL – English Language Learners SLO – Student Learning Objective PAARCC- Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers Children Need and Thrive on Routine – The #1 tip for good sleeping habits in children is to follow a nightly routine. A bedtime ritual makes it easier for your child to relax, fall asleep and sleep through the night. Typical Bedtime Routine: Have a light snack. Take a bath. Put on pajamas. Brush teeth. Read a story. Make sure the room is quiet and at a comfortable temperature. Put your child to bed. Say goodnight and leave. Helpful Hints Make bedtime the same time every night. Children and Sleep With the upcoming holidays, it is easy to let children get off schedule with their sleeping routines. This may be detrimental to their health and growth. The following information about children’s sleep for parents and teachers from sleepforkids.com contains some helpful hints: Sleep is a vital need, essential to a child’s health and growth. Sleep promotes alertness, memory and performance. Children who get enough sleep are more likely to function better and are less prone to behavioral problems and moodiness. That is why it is important for parents to start early and help their children develop good sleep habits. How much sleep should my child get? Each child is different and has different sleep needs. This chart presents recommended hours of sleep that includes naps for children up to five years of age. Make bedtime a positive and relaxing experience without TV or videos. According to one recent study, TV viewing prior to bed can lead to difficulty falling and staying asleep. Save your child’s favorite relaxing, non- stimulating activities until last and have them occur in the child’s bedroom. Keep the bedtime environment (e.g. light, temperature) the same all night long.
